THURSPAY, AUG. oy J Leonard Adds Another Victory As Twilight League Closes

By BERNARD HARMON - The twilight" amateur baseball league, the circuit that produced some of the best sandlot games of the season, rang down the 1946 curtain last night with a trio. of contests at Riverside park. Leonard Cleaners, which had already clinched first place .in the loop’s standings, added another victory to its record through a 5-3 win over Ferris Food Markets, the team that recently replaced Union Printers.

Most of the scoring came in the initial frame, when the winners tallied four times in a rally. that opened with Jerry Steiner's home run and wound up with pitcher Hatch Northington's triple. Ferris came back with a cluster of three that featured Barton Wall's roundtripper. Northington held the losers to four safeties.

DeWolf Wins DeWolf News continued its recent winning streak with a 6-5 win over Kingan Reliables in a game that produced three home runs. A trio of hits and three walks issued by Ochel Tuck, Kingan starting hurler, gave the: Newsmen a quartet of markers in the third stanza, and] they added another in the fifth on, & pair of singles. Jiggs Seal broke the. ice for Kingan with a fourth inning homerun, and the meatmen tallied four times in the sixth as Bill Wysa lead & rally with a four-base knock.

DeWolf, in the nreantime, had pro-| duced what proved the winning | tally in the fifth, when Ed Wirtz| connected for a homer, "Pv. R. Mallory had a tough time} shaking off a determined St. Roch] nine, but finally took a 6-4 decision. Jim Doyle, the first Roch batter to face Geo. Butler, put his team out in front with a home-run. The winners assumed a 3-1 lead in the first five innings, but the Roch§ knotted the count in. the sixth, only to fall by the wayside, as a walk, stolen base and two errors pushed over two Mallory runs in the seventh. Failed to Score The losers loaded the bases in the bottom half of the final inning but failed to plate a runner, as Typen popped for the final out. St. Roch infielders executed four double plays in the seven-inning affair. Eagles Lodge and Blue Ribbon Ice Cream called off their scheduled Twilight tilt, and clashed in a nineinning postponed City league contest. A 3-1 victory assured the Lodgemen of at least a tie for first place in that loop. Manford Ellis, Ribbon pitcher, held the winners to three hits, but overthrows to catch runners off third base produced two of the Eagles runs, one in the first and one in the sixth. Their third marker resulted from two of their hits in the eighth. A base on balls, a stolen base and a hit gaye the losers their lone tally,

Owen Out For 5 Years

CINCINNATI, O., Aug. 15 (U..P). —There was no place in major league baseball today—nor will there be for the next five years— for ex-Dodger Catcher Mickey Owen or any of the other players who left to seek their fortunes in the Mexican league. Baseball Commissionar A. B. Chandler made that plain last night | when he Issued A reiteration of an | earlier ruling "that all Mexican | league jumpers were automatically suspended for five years, “No evidence has been shown to the commissioner that would alter his opinion on the suspension of players who jumped contracts in organized baseball,” the statement said. Owen, who fled from a lucrative Mexican league contract in an effort to regain a catching job with the pennant-seeking Brooklyn Dodgers, had hoped that he would be given amnesty by the commissioner because he had not actually been under contract to Brooklyn when he made his jump. Contending that his case differed from those of other| {Jumpers because he went directly | {from the navy to Mexico, Owen em- | phasized that he would be ina good position to persuade other jumpers to ‘return if he received lenient treatment.
