night, romping through the lobbies of two downtown hotels before police succeeded in quelling a near riot that resulted, Yay The hotels said they were duped by the America Firsters, who gathered for a meeting of “Independent Republicans of the Midwest,” instead of the regular Republicans expected by the hotels. Boos, jeers and a couple of mild first fights were exchanged between anti-Smith pickets and Smith followers, led by Mrs. Elizabeth Dilling, author of “The Red Network,” and one of the defendants in last year’s mass sedition trial. All available squads in the loop area raced first to the Stevens hotel, then to the Morrison hotel, where Smith’s followers had gone when the Stevens management canceled the meeting. The Morrison also refused the use of its room, charging it had been rented by trickery. Through it all, Smith, a former Indianapolis preacher, remained carefully in the background, and it {was not until later that he tele{phoned from his suite at another hotel: to denounce “gangsters and Jewish terrorists” who he said had interfered with the meeting.

Colonial Secretary George Hall conferred at London with Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the World Zionist organization, and other Jewish agency leaders. Informed sources sald the conference examined President Truman's coun= ter-proposals for Palestine. Mr. Truman's reply was received and considered by the British cabinet yesterday.
