Least Expensive Fealure “Oolor is the least expensive ingredient in making a home really attractive,” Mrs, Hall says, For example, take a modest fiveroom frame cottage. The roof is gray and the sides are covered with shingles of a soft green shade. Add white window frames and doorways and you have an attractive home. ~ But—add daffodil yellow shutters around the place and you have the difference between a nice home and one the neighbors will envy. A$ least, so say the color enthusiasts,

‘another point in the use of color schemes for your home. True it is your honie and your paint, but for best results to everyone concerned, location and nearby residences must be considered because they are part of the background that frame your “blue heaven.” Landscape Involved The landscape has a great deal to do with the amount of color you can use on your home. A large lawn, trees, and an abundance of shrubbery blend and tone down the sharpness of bright colors making the entiré area pleasing to the eye. Any color in the spectrum can be used in painting your home. Conventionally we have become used to the idea of doors being varnished a dark color or a light natural wood color. Yet, doors can be attractive, painted bright red, or a deep rich blue, depending, of course, on the background you provide for that door. Accent on Shutters, Sills
When the body of the house is in| a subdued tone, accents can be) placed on shutters, window sills and | doors. In reverse, a home can be attractive with deep blue as the body color, on the second floor, for example, The first floor would blend in nicely if it were of gray stone. A lighter gray slate roof would further tone down and blend the top heavy color into a balanced whole. With white shutters and doors and adequate landscaping what would ordinarily be a profusion and confusion of blue would be something that would make the prospective home buyer jump for joy. from crosses of his own is his hobby. His father and grandfather raised glads commercially, Mr. Rogers brings in new breeding stock from all over the world, some of his “good parent plants” coming from Australia and New Zealand. LJ » . THE ENORMOUS flower spikes now blooming vary through a rainbow of colors from white and the palest of pale yellow through splashings of carmine and cerise to deep shades overcast with a smoky hage and the unusual blue glads. Some are frilled and ruffled. Some are miniatures that surely belong in fairylahd. And as new flowers open “the picture is different every day,” Mr. Rogers said, adding, “out ot 20,000 in these two rows there are no two alike.”. Luckily for the visitors, who are always welcome to his glad garden, they don't all bloom at the same time. His advice to the amateur who has a few cherished bulbs: First, you can easily increase those you already have. In 4 years time you can have 7000 or more bulbs from each one you've started with if you give them proper care and plant the small cormlets each season.
” # PROPER CARE during mid-sums= mer means chiefly plenty of water. They don’t have to have specially rich soil but they do need water. Never hesitate even after a rain to sprinkle them especially when they are making flower spikes. They'll drink unbelievable amounts then.”
| color that blend beautifully for your home. A two-tone tobacco brown and cream home with white sashes and doors can be attractively done. So you see, there is no need of being afraid of color, as long as you know what you are doing with it. The safest rule is, don’t be like the handy husband with a can of green paint in the kitchen who dabbles and dabbles until the kitchen resembles Junior's color book.
Developing new seedling glads i
Mr. Rogers waters them in the afternoon, so they have a chance to soak up the moisture during the night. Diseases of glads, unlike those of many flowers and vegetables are not increased by watering late in the day, Blue colors, so coveted in gladfolus, are best brought out by soil with plenty of iron in it. A complete chemical fertilizer probably supplies all of this element that is necessary, he says. o "
to do too much fussing with their glads yet want really beautiful flowers he suggested a few dependables in different colors, Alonquin and Stoplight are good reds. Leading Lady, creamy white, also Maid of Orleans, and Snow Princess. Acca Laurentia is a “good orange” and for blues, Blue Beauty, Blue Admiral and Raysheen, the latter a pale blue and also a “good parent,” which is to say it produces plenty of seed. King Lear and

Purple Supreme are good purples. Those 1 liked best were, of course, in the “temperamental” class. But the smoky tan and rose of King Tan, and the tan ruffles of Bolero would be worth a little display of temperament. If you want the fun of raising some seedlings of your own you can use the seeds that develop naturally. Mr. Rogers, of course, chooses par-
