. GREAT LAKES STRICE J DELAY 1S CONSIDERED

CHICAGO, Aug. 14 (U, PD). — James Ragen Jr, 65, wealthy tycoon of racing information - who was wounded seriously last June 24 in a Chicago gangland ambush shooting—died early today at Michael Reese hospital, Ragan had been in a serious con- | dition since the | shooting when his J right shoulder was torn by a shotgun blast. The elderly race ing news distributor never left the hospital. He was operated on last Thursday for a kidney ailment which developed after the attempt-on his life, and failed to rally. Ragen's wife, three sons and three daughters were at his bedside when he died. A sensational 98-page statement, given police by Ragen before the shooting prompted state, local and] federal authorities to join forces in the most comprehensive inves- | tigation into Chicago's underworld since Al Capone was sent to prison 14 years ago. Steps to solve the shooting had ben delayed until Ragen's recovery, so that U. 8. attorneys could question him about ‘his ‘charges that remnants of the Capone gang had attempted to muscle in on the race news business. Th his statement Ragen cited evidence to show that “Scarface Al” Capone, notorious crime baron of bootleg days, still controlled organized racketeering through his lieutenants, The statement charged that Capone was seeking to muscle in on every horserace Randbook in the nation, Ragen also charged that former

HOUSING SHORTAGE HITS GI'S EDUCATION|

WASHINGTON, Aug. 14 (U. P). —A shortage of temporary housing facilities today threatened the plans of thousands of veterans to continue their schooling. The federal public housing authority estimated that only 20,000 of a hoped-for 103,000 housing units would be ready for occupancy by veterans and their families when the fall term begins. The agency sald that only 12,000 units have been completed. Dr. Ralph McDonald, an executive of the National Education association, said the “inevitable result” will be that thousands of veterans

James M. Ragen, Race News Publisher, Dies in Chicago

Illinois State Senator Dan Seritella has served as political “fixer” for Capone's underworld syndicate. Seritella was taken into custody June 25 and was released the following day. Ragen was shot when he stopped his sleek, silver-colored car for a red light at a_busy intersection. e shots came from a dilapidated fruit truck covered with a tarpaulin which hid the assailants and their weapons. Police said the shooting had been planned carefully and executed in typical gangland fashion. The camouflaged truck, however, was an innovation ‘in’ Chicago shootings, leading police to believe that the gunmen had been imported.

MAY FORGIVE WIFE

CHICAGO, Aug. 14 (U, P).— Donald R. Murray, 41, acquitted by a jury in the slaying of his wife's lover, said today that “I suppose I'll take her backs His wife, Doris, 36, said she would | spend the rest of her life atoning for her mistake—"“If Don will decide to come home and take up things where he left off.”

But neither could see an immediate end to the separation which began last May 27 when Murray fired a bullet into the body of Maj, John W. Fletcher of the Canadian army. Murray found his wife and best
