Doris’ Murray, 36, waited at home | alone today, hoping. the testimony |she gave to free her husband of a murder charge would bring for-| | giveness for the illicit romance | which prompted the slaying. i FA jury of eight women and four| men last night acquitted Donald Murray, 41, of the murder of his best friend. The verdict was reached after 43 minutes of deliberation, They voted unanimously for acquital after comely Mrs. Murray sacrificed her honor to save her husband by testifying about an eight-hour tryst last May 27 in a, hotel room with Mr. Murray's Slog est friend, Maj. John Fletcher of] the Canadian army. “Too Good to Be True’ Mrs. Murray heard the news of | her husband's acquittal at her downtown office, where she operates a secretarial service “I can't believe it's true” she exclaimed. “It's too good to be true.” Then she went to her suburban Wheaton, Ill, home, to await a telephone call or a visit from her husband. Mr. Murray, heavy-set deputy sheriff and salesman, turned pale as the verdict was announced, but recovered rapidly then solemnly shook hands with the jurors and thanked them for setting him free. The spectators who jammed the courtroom cheered. Asked whether he would return to his wife, he said: “1 don't know. time.”

Immersed in His Work It was over Mr. Murray's protest that she told her story of how her husband had surprised her in the nude with Mr. Fletcher, Her story was one of an indulgent husband. a businessman immersed in his work, a bit plump, a bit She described him as a man with a bad stomach, who didn’t want to dance, who didn't care much for music and who “took her for granted.” Mrs. Murray said she had felt only hatred toward her husband after he shot the’ man she thought she loved. She said she had wanted to destroy him for breaking up her romance. But she concluded her testimony with a statement of her love for Mr. Murray. Blinking away her tears, she said: “I love him, I've always loved him.”
