stories will be brought to the screen

which will have prominent churchmen of several denominations acting in an advisory capacity. B. P. Fineman, who has been a producer of feature length films for several major Hollywood companies, announced the project yesterday in colldboration with Paramount pictures, whicn will distribute the films on a no-profit basis. The films will be two-reelers done in technicolor. Prominent writers will prepare the scripts and experienced Hollywood personnel will act in and make the pictures. Mr. Pineman started back to Hollywood yesterday to begin work on the first production although no decision has been made as to what it will be. The first releases will be in 1947, and it is planned to make about six a year.

Charge Not Yet Known Living Word, Inc, is the hame of the company that will make the pictures. Mr, Fineman is president.

He retains control of the 16 mm. rights and can distribute the pictures to churches, and educational institutions after a reasonable period of consumption of the 35 mm. film by commercial theaters. Fees for use of the 168 mm. will depend upon how much of the cost is recaptured in commercial runs. “Our chief aim is to bring the ‘most dramatic stories in both the Old and New Testaments to life as entertainment,” Mr. Fineman said. “We feel that in this time of confusion people want to return to basic truths and that motion piectures proMide the most telling form of presentation.” “Originally we planned to film these stories in the Holy Land,” Mr, _Fineman said, “but conditions there now make it necessary to abandon this idea.”

Noel Coward Operetta Is Admirably Presented

By HENRY BUTLER “Bitter Sweet” was still going

going strong at the state fairgrounds :

long after 11 last night. For the Indianapolis Oper \theater's 1046 offering got off to a late start and was further slowed down by some probably unavoidable delays between scenes.

But as. a pioneer venture in new territory (the fairgrounds turned out to be a bettér site than any of us had expected), the Noel Coward operetta was admirably done. With Jordan conservatory’s Charles Hedley as director, and with Billie Cole and Frank Parrish in the leadMe roles, the pleasantly sentimen-~ tal and tuneful opus delighted an audience of some 6000 persons. Opera under the stars, to use the slogan of the Opera theatre and its park board sponsors, was a reality last night, with the Great Dipper obligingly sparkling in the sky.

What the stage crew had probably |

not prepared for was a spanking

eries billowing and occasionally revealed back-stage glimpses. The drone of a transport plane (reminiscent of symphony concerts New York's Lewisohn stadium) and the deep, melancholy whistle of the Mongn (not in-Mr. Coward's score)

Temporary Stage A temporary stage, across the race-track from the grandstand, was equipped with more micro-

convention. Consequently, the singers were always audible, occasionally to the extent of almost drowning out the orchestra, as in one of the duets between Mr. Parrish and Miss Cole. It seemed unfor-

Mr. Par-| rish is too well known locally to need introduction, but I will say! that he was in fine voice last night, | and brought clarity of tone and| good musicianship to his singing! of the voice-teacher's role. Miss! Cole combines a lot of charm with | a clear and luscious youthful so- | prano. Her singing has just the | right degree of poignancy for such! a number as the famous “I'll See You Again.” Deserve Special Mention Other singers deserving especial mention include Martha Metcalf, as Dolly Chamberlain, and Maxine Shrader, as Manon, the prima-don-na of Schlick’s Viennese cafe. Miss Shrader brought excellent singing to a much-too-long number in act II, scene 1. That song, a kind of autobiograhical fantasy, could stand some cutting, as could some other
