APS DEFENDING SINGAPORE NOW
Destroy . Railroad Which Could Ruin City. A
By GEORGE WELLER Times Foreign Correspondent BANGKOK, Siam, Aug. 9.—Japanese prisoners under British command now are busy defending Singmpore—with crowbars and shovels. They are destroying Japan's ralilroad across Kra isthmus—thus protecting Singapore “# against turning ' into a ghost oity, economically. Japan's railroad across Kra isthe ; mus—between the * Gulf of Siam and the Indiana ocean —shortened the route between the ports of China and India by 1200 miles, The Kra railroad was meant as a preliminary to the Kra canal—T70 miles long which would cut across the long dangling neck of land by which Malaya hangs like a pendant at the end of southeast Asia, Feared by Singapore Singapore shivered in the pre-war days whenever the Japanese talked about building this canal. The main task of British diplomacy in Siam was to prevent the Japanese from building—or encouraging Siam to build—the ‘canal which would break Singapore's mastery of the east Asiatic trade routes, The British aim of permanently removing the threat of the Kra canal to Singapore has been achieved:
