Women Urged | To Stick: To Tradition

By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Scripps-Howard Staff Writer

The rosiest future for the woman worker, who is trained or willing to be trained, is in the woman's trades —food and fashions. This is the word given by a well-

{

known employment counselor. She! i advises women to keep to the “safe” | §

professions if they don't want to be ousted by the male breadwinner.’

This always is sane advice. While many are gifted in lines of work which ‘were once monopolized by men, the average girl fits better into a job which calls for feminine talents. After world war I hundreds of thousands of girls took training for office jobs.” ‘It was the height of their ambition to get a stenographic position. For a time it looked as if every woman intended to have a white collar business career. Country girls, city girls, smart girls, dumb girls, all aspired to the same thing. It became the fashion to go into an office.

False Pride

Vast numbers who had not been equipped by nature for such work followed the trend. As a conse-| quence the depression saw them fired in droves. Many got down| to their last quarter before ‘hey were willing to consider other work During that harsh period I was connected with the Y. W. C. A. and saw what false pride can do to a girl. Many who came asking help didn't want to demean themselves with domestic work. { Since then the scope of feminine activity has widened tremendously but if women are smart they will

stick to traditional occupations. | Our future depends partly upon our ability to see economic facts. | Women have many aptitudes; none are more important or more needed than the domestic talents. There are thousands of places where we

fit—this time let us-fit ourselves|

into these places.

‘Security Can Harm Children’

“Too much security is not good!

for kids" says Dr. Karl M. Bow-| man, psychiatry professor at the University of California. Here is something that needs to be said often. Modern parents, mis-

. led by former psychological pargon * “‘about frustrations, have often con ditioned their children to be I'rre-

sponsible, soft and bad. Too much security isn't good for anyone. But the sense of depend- | ence upon outside forces is a culti-| vated trait. | The campus has fostered a good deal of nonsense. None is more vicious than the idea that the gov|eriment is responsible ior our wel|fare, ‘instead of the other way around. Talk to undergraduates and you'll find many who profess to

|believe the world owes them not al

job, mind you, hut a living. While saving nothing for their own old age, many out of these groups urge government payments for old, indigent and unfortunate, No government is secure when its people consider government thew only security.
