Cole Porter Show Honors 20th Birthday of Talkies
Local observance of the 20th anniversary of talking pictures will be highlighted tomorrow with the’ opening of Warner Brothers’ “Night and Day” at the Indiana theater. The film version of Hoosier Com=poser Cole Porter's career, chosen by Warners to mark the first fifth of a century of sound, stars Alexis Smith and Cary Grant, and, involves such notables as Monty Woolley in its technicolor progress. With plenty of opulent orchestration of Mr. Porter's song hits, the] film may serve as well as any to signalize technical progress in the sound-film industry. As plenty af | columnists on metropolitan dailies] have agreed, we've come a long way from the scratchy unpredictability of early sound films with their synchronized disk records or their troublesome sound tracks. | Flicker Drama Recalled Metropolitan commentators have mentioned early sound features, | such as “Don Juan” and “Thé Jazz Singer.” No writers that I've seen have referred to still earlier efforts to liven movies with sound effects. | In pre-world war I days, Lyman | Howe, forerunner of Burton| Holmes, who used to tour the coun- | ° try with programs of lectures, miscellaneous short subjects and travelogues, had at least one two- -reel | flicker drama with a synchronized phonograph dialog. I saw it in the! Garrick theater in Philadelphia, but don't ask me what year it was, since I was still being taken around more or less on a leash. Talkies Once Debated Authorities tell us that successful sound had to wait on the invention of the vacuum-tube amplifier, A big question 20 years ago (and{ plenty of péople debated it seri-| ously) was: “Are talking pictures, here to stay?” One thing is for sure: Sound has made movies gen-| erally a lot better than they used! to be, as you'll agree when you see! | specimen sequences from average told flickers.—H. B.

It's enormously popular in church solo work, and the demand for it has probably led a lot of youngsters to struggle with its difficulties long before they're prepared for it.

Here's a tip to the young singer: If you're trying wo learn some dif- | neult, song or aria, geu a recordmg of it, by a first-rate artist. Listen to it until you've practically memorized it. Note the technique, the phrasing, the diction, the breathcontrol—all the things that go into fine singing. And remember that every first-rate vocal artist has! gone through years of carefull. training, beginning with simple, easy things, and gradually working| up-to the more showy.
