| SATURDAY 0 : ~~ Broad Ripple Pastor Believes In Comfort for

“A cool and comfortable congregation worships and. listens mor completely than a suffering one.” This is the theory expressed by the Rev. W. E. Gillett, pastor of the Broad Ripple Methodist church, Following his own “preachment,”

the pastor sheds his coat before the Sunday morning sermon if the day is very warm. Men of the congregation are welcome tq come coatless to services and a good many do so every Sunday. The Rev. Mr. Gillett is all for in-

preaching-worship-service. He feels that Sunday school is vitally necessary but not, enough. Children need the worship experience which is the main purpose of the morning services, he says.

Boys Serve As Ushers

With this in mind, boys are permitted to usher the congregation to the pews and to take up the collection. They perform these helpful duties with a solemn dignity, the Sunday morning visitor will tell you. The Rev. Mr. Gillett attempts to administer to his membership in every needed way, much in the manner of the rural pastor. He has always run an informal employment agency for his parishioners, he reports. Now, he does the reverse—tries to find persons for Jobs rather than jobs for members of the congregation. He placed approximately 15 “unwanted dogs” in good homes in recent months. In fact, he does his best, he says, to handle the diversifled problems which come his way. ‘Shopping Day’ Conducted For years, his church has conducted a “Mother's Shopping day.” Women of the congregation prepare lunch which school children may purchase at a small price. Movies and other entertainment are furnished to fill the noon hour. - Thus the children do not go home from school, but to the church at lunch time, Being released from the duty

CONTROL HOUSE

SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 3 (U. P.) —Carroll Reece, Republican national chairman, says the G. O. P. can gain control of the house, and possibly the senate, this fall with the help of western states.

Mr. Reece, addressing a meeting of party chairmen from 11 western states last night, cited a “trend” toward the Republican party which, he said, had been aided by a current senate investigation of Senator Andrew J. May (D. Ky.) and a midwest munitions combine, The “May incident,” he said, had “created a bad odor around the administration.” ‘Strong Incentive’ Mr. Reece sald that the forthe coming elections provided a “strong incentive for citizens of the western states to make certain that the government in Washington is truly representative of the people” and said that G. O. P. victories in the west would assure a Republicandominated congress. Interspersed throughout his speech were blasts at the Truman administration which he termed a “misfit alliance of radical and corrupt machine elements.” He charged the corrupt machine rule with getting votes for the Democratic party, while the radical element controlled policy under “intellectual guidance” from Moscow. In an interview. Mr. Reece singled out election-day violence at Athens, Tenn. ‘as a-case in point and said it was an indication of the nationwide revolt against corrupt Demo-crat-machine rule.

This Rookie Didn't Waste Any Time

Patrolman Bill Pond, former Tech high school football star, made his first arrest just 27 minutes after he began his career as an Indianapolis policeman, Starting on hjs initia} tour of duty at midnight last night, the young patrolman nabbed a suspected burglar at a gasoline filling station at 38th and Ruckle sts, at 12:27 a. m. in company with his partner, Patrolman Harry Badgley. The patrolmen noticed that the front door of the station was open and a rear window had been broken. They arrested a 44-year-old East side man who was loitering near the station. He is being held on a vagrancy charge pending investigation.

Yeggs Just Take Safe With Them

Burglars who pried iron bars from the skylight of the Emerick Hardware store, 2526 W. Michigan st. last night didn't stop to break open the store safe—they took it along with them, The 3x2-foot safe, contained $350. They also rifled the cash register, taking a small amount of cash, but abandoned three radios they had set aside as loot. William Emerick, 3506 Watson rd., owner of the store, said the hoodlums “wrecked the store” before they left by a rear door, lugging the safe along with them.
