the final prolonged chiming in the end. Death Brings Tolling
This occurs at 6 a. m., at noon and 6 p. m, daily. Different prayers are offered during the ringing with the Hail Mary said in the intervals of silence. When a Holy Trinity parishioner dies, the janitor tolls the church bell as soon as he is notified. Mem- { bers of the congregation, who have

gravely ill, know by the tolling what has happened. The bell also tolls from time to time until after the burial. At Christmas, Easter, on the Feast of Holy Trinity and on such such occasions as V-E and V-J days, the bells ring long and joyfully. Then three men swing them, employing a definite rhythm said to be impressive.
Prayers Are Expected All Catholics everywhere are expected to say the designated prayer {if it is possible, when they hear |the Angelus ringing. If they are in a private place, they are supposed to cease all activities and reverently pray. This brings to mind Millet’s painting of = the French peasants suspending their work in the fields upon the sound of the Angelus. In addition to Holy Trinity, Holy Rosary and Sacred Heart Catholic churches are known for their bells, A few local Catholic churches { possess no ‘bells and some have been

By EMMA RIVERS MILNER Timés Church Editor
The Angelus rung by Indianapolis church bells and others around the world sounds a message of special meaning for the Paric Peace
Since the 13th century, the Angelus bells have been called “peace bells” and have carried the same connotations. Their ringing serves as a _| reminder of the Incarnation, of the

forced to discentinue the ringing of the Angelus because of the lack of bell ringers. It takes a strong arm, you know, to pull a rope and set in motion ~ metal bells weighing hundreds of pounds, even tons. The Bacred Heéart church has four bells. The largest occupies the north steeple, was cast in St. Louis, measures 60 inches across its base and is 50 inches high. It is dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The other three bells occupy the south steeple and are dedicated, respectively, to St. Francis, the Blessed Virgin and to St. Joseph. A new electric bell ringer was installed recently to operate the big bell. The Angelus sounds three times daily, Largest Weighs 7000 Pounds The largest of Holy Rosary’s six bells weighs 7000 pounds. When it swings, you can feel the vibration at quite a distance. The church now is installing electrical machin~ ery to swing the bells for the Angelus and for services. The bell of Our Lady of Lourdes church sounds the Angelus and is operated by an electric bell-ringer and a time clock. Some of the other churches which ring the
