Steel Production-Cost Boosts Going Rounds for Second Time
. By ROBERT TAYLOR Scripps-Howard Staff Writer WASHINGTON, July 31, — The wave of production-cost increases in the fron .and steel industry, touched off by the steel-strike settiement last February, is now going
“ the rounds a second time,
‘The revived OPA for the second time Is increasing ceiling prices on such items as pig iron and nuts and bolts, to cover additional cost ine creases which followed the steel strike settlement. It all started last Feb. 15 when President Truman, negotiating = settlement of the steel strike, won agreement on an increase of 18% sents an hour, There was a difference within the administration on how much to allow the steel companies to come pensate them for increased labor costs.’ Finally they were allowed an average increase of $5 a ton in ceiling prices. Starts Series of Hikes
Then it was found the fabricating industries needed price increases. They had to pay the same 18% cents increase and pay $5 more for their material.
Starting in April | Abbex Win
miners also got the hourly increase. OPA increased pig-iton prices last March 15 by 75 cents a ton, after the C. 1. O, steelworkers won their wage boost. Get Second Boost The revived OPA has upped pig fron prices another $2 a ton to make up for cost increases given the coal, coke and iron ore workers, plus other increases in the cost of supplies. The total increase is almost 10 per cent of the presert cost of pig iron. OPA last April 1 also had upped the prices of bolts, nuts, screws and rivets by seven per cent. Last week it added another five per cent, for wage Increases and “other recent cost increases,” making the
creases on fabricated steel products are “pass-through” increases, which can be handed on, intact, by the manufacturer.
