" youthful ‘blue eyes under the world famous eyebrows at his visitors: 2 “I don’t like this,” he cried petulantly, pounding his cane on the ground. “I never celebrate birthdays. I don't like congratulations, 1 don’t give interviews. Although— his eye twinkled—"I may have been quoted once or twice.” And so he came to his 90th birthday anniversary with the world still unable to tell for sure when his tongue is in his cheek. Of the visitors straggling irresist-| ably toward his house, Mr, .8haw

Mind 1s Clear

“They've come to see the animal Just because he's 90.” At 90 G. B. 8. is thin to the point of frailty, and cannot walk without his stick. But his mind is clear and restless. He has finished with this creative| writing, however, Or so it seems. Only recently he laid aside a new’ play he had started. ‘ He is fond of speculating on his death, which he says may come “any time from 10 minutes to 10| years.” But sometimes he insists! he will clear the century mark, and it will find him at his desk. { Most of the writings revealing his| thoughts these days are compila- | tions of remarks usually uttered at| different times, or his celebrated pink postcards which sometimes [show up unannounced on editorial | desks with pungent thoughts on | problems of the moment.

THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES

Grandmother Was 88

He has strong opinions on politi-| cal problems. For example, atom bombs. He considers them uneconomic, because they leave for the victor only rubble instead of thriving industries. He attributes his longevity to his grandmother, who achieved 88 after 15 children. And he likes to think he has achieved a greater age than any other famous man of let-|} ters native to these isles. Although he denies it, Mr. Shaw is proud that his native Dublin has sent a six-man committee to make him a freeman of the city today, almost 70 years to the day after he left home with a few pennies and a wealth of ambition.

FAMILY ‘ADOPTED’ BY INJURED FAWN

Times Special BLOOMINGTON, Ind, July 26.— Timothy, the fawn which “adopted” the Jersey cow and the Bart Mitch-|. ner family south of here when its own mother disappeared, yesterday received the attention of a veterinarian taken to the Polk township farm by Game Warden Ercel Brown. The veterinarian praised the efforts of Mr, Mitchner who had set a broken leg using, shingles and strips from a pair of old overalls. He said that he believed Timothy, who is only eight weeks old, will recover, The game warden did not remove the deer, since it is not in captivity but wanders in the forest reserve adjacent to the Mitchner farm, coming to the house when called by the four children—or when lunch time rolls around.
