Press Agents Lead Miss 'R'’ To Washington

Pardons Herself to Amend Toilette. By FREDERICK ©. OTHMAN

United Press Staff Correspondent . °°

WASHINGTON, July 28.--What would you do if Jane Russell stood under a banana tree (pink bananas) in the congressional greenhouse and sald, pardon her while she changed |

her blouse? ' Exactly. Rep. Carl Hinshaw of California, Rep. Harold C. Hagen of Minnesota, and I turned our eyes to the congressional papaya bush—even as you say you would—while Miss R., amended her tollette for technicolor. This was gentlemanly, but as fit turned out, unnecessary. Miss Rus sell didn’t change her blouse. She merely put one blouse on top of another blouse, What,’ you may ask, were we doing there? Congressman Hinshaw, obviously, was entertaining a constituent. Congressman Hagen was inviting her to go fishing in Bemidji, Minn, where she was born. Miss Russell was obeying the orders of her two press agents to pose for a color photo of her rep ceiving an orchid. Whips Out Blouse This would persuade the horticulturists jo pay their money to see a nwvie® Miss Russell made sin weeks ago. As I get it, Miss Russell did not wear two blouses in this epic of the silver screen. She only wore one blouse, which wasn't only tight, but ragged, too. The censors have been on the verge of apoplexy ever since, or so said the press agents. I didn't mean to get off the subject. I also had .a good feason for being at the botanical gardens. I walited to smell a perfumed kaskelliana. Dr. William Frederick, the chief botanist, said only one orchid in 10,000 has any smell at all. He started. to hand this flower to Miss Russell, but the photographers said her dress, dark blue, high necked and streamlined, would not do. : She whipped out another blouse, white, with pink and lavender stripes, and put that on. The photographers said that was fine. Miss Russell said it certainly was hot. Rep. Hagen said the climate was Miss Russell had her picture taken. She shed her extra blouse and I asked her about the movie she made in her youth, back in 1940. Its title, the press agents quickly pointed out, is “The Outlaw.”

Miss Russell was vague. After all, it was a long time ago. A girl forgets things over the years. I do not. Shortly before I left Hollyw {a few years ago, I saw “The Out-| law” I did not object to Miss| Russell's blouse on the screen. I didn’t even object to the picSome of the critics said it]

century, I! The funniest supposed to be serious. This I can- | not believe, Rep. Hinshaw, in any event, took Miss Russell to the capitol, where | she shook the hand of Speaker Rayburn (who wouldn't let the photographers record this event), autographed a dollar bill for Rep. James G. Fulton of Pennsylvania, caused | numerous typographical errors in| the press gallery, and had lunch. She ate with Rep. Hinshaw and Senator Sheridan Downey, who also hails from California. Miss Russell said Washington was interesting.
