Jews Fleeing Into U. S. Zone in U.S. Zone 1 Germany Must Find Homes; Arabs Don’t Want Them in Palestine.

(One of a Series.) By LYLE C. WILSON United Press Staff Correspondent July 25.—~The Jewish underground railway through Austria is helping to build up the explosive force of the refugee problem in European areas occupied now by American troops, The underground aids Jews from eastern Europe to reach Austria and to move westward to the American zone of Germany. TRUMAN ASKS = FOR TERMINAL PAY

WASHINGTON, July 25 (U. P). —President Truman today reaffimed his conviction that terminal leave: pay for G. 1.’s should be made in the form of bonds rather than cash. The President's renewed support came in the form of a request for $2,679,493,000 to carry out the provisions of the G. I. leave pay bill, although it "has not yet been passed by congress. Yesterday the house formally rejected the senate “bond version” of the medsure and named conferees to meet with a senate committee to adjust differences in the two bills, The senate bill provides payment for terminal leave be made in bonds for all amounts above $50. smoothly and with the informal assistance of the United States army. If Jews persecuted by the Nazis and Jews fleeing Soviet Rusia contihue to stream into American areas, means must be found for

them to move on to Palestine, or somewhere. Otherwise there eventually will be trouble for the Jews and for us. The railway is so well organized that Jews in Vienna can telephone Jews in Budapest, Hungary, and learn how many of their refugees are likely to arrive next week or, even, next month,

which is occupied by the United States army, the Jews stand by until there is room for them in the American zone in Germany com- | manded by Gen. Joseph T. MecNarney. Then the Jews move on. Gen. Mark Clark is the American | commanding general in Austria. He and his officers know all about the underground railway operation. It is United States policy to aid the persecuted: Jews. Although other displaced persons will be turhed back at the frontiers of the United States zones in Germany or Austria, the gates are up for the Jews to come in, “At present,” says Gen. Clark's official report ‘on "the situation, “Jewish displaced persons in the U. 8. occupied zone of Austria total 5280. These were left in Austria as a result of the war and are static. They are receiving the best of care and some rehabilitation at places like the Jewish settlement at Bad Gastein, They present no major Austrian problem.” Urge Recognition It is the underground railroad Jews who create problems in Austria. The Jewish underground railroad and the United States army apparently co-operate’ to solve the problem by passing the Jews on to Gen. McNarney in Germany. There they settle down to await the opening of Palestine, If it does not open soon there will be trouble with or about the Jews in Germany. Some persons suggest the United States government might go all the | way—officially recognize and legal- | ize the migration of Jews into the American zones in Austria and | Germany. Rabbi P, S. Bernstein, of Rochester, N. Y, adviser to Gen. McNarney, is one of those, It appears that the United States might as well do that. The migra- | tion is unofficially recognized and | supported as it is. But the danger flags are up on the Jewish problem in Europe. As it works out those Jews who can do 50 are arranging to come to the American zones if they are not already there. The bitter question is | where shall they go next? The Hard Facts

Our immediate solution is to open | the gates of Palestine to at least 100,000 of them. Great Britain | controls Palestine and has in the Near East an enormous stake in| Arab goodwill, The Arabs do not! want the Jews, It is not inhospitality nor unfriendliness that causes Gen, McNarney and Gen. Clark and other American officers to wish urgently that the Jews had some placé to go. The hard facts are that if the Jews continue to accumulate in the American zone of . Germany there will be an explosion of some kind. The frustrated Jews will be able to contain themselves in waiting for | {Just so long—then there will be! | trouble.
