of steel and other key supplies was plamed today for the lag in auto-

mobile production. Two officials of the Ford Motor Co. warned that the

famine in cars will continue for another 12 to 15 months before full

production is reached. Despite the fact that nearly a

year has elapsed since the end of

the war, the automobile industry | is producing at only 50 per cent of |

capacity, John R. Davis, Ford vice president in charge of sales, and M.

L. Bricker, vice president in charge of manufacturing, reported.

The Ford Motor Co. which ey a daily capacity of 6000 units, is|

producing only 3200, they said. Improvement Anticipated

Material shortages, principally | steel, would hold Ford and other | companies to levels not much above | the current output far into 1947, Mr. Bricker said. However, he added, slight improvement in production is anticipated. The industry is enjoying the! greatest market in its history and will be able to sell without difficulty

The present m market for cars and trucks is about 15,000,000 to 16,000, 000, Mr. Davis estimated, while pro-| duction capacity is between 5.600, 000 and 6,000,000 units annually. Sellers Market to Continue

Sales research indicated that the present free seller's market would continue for another year without much indication of selective buying by the public because of the great] demand, Mr. Davis added. He said the time was not yet ripe for Ford to bring out its new light car, aimed at a lower ‘prite range, | and that probably the first model | changes in the standard car would | not come until 1948.

“The bulk of the housing that would be provided under the W-E-T.bill would be public charity housing—and veterans who are} earning their own way would Jot be eligible for living in it,” Mason said. He declared all elements of the home building industry in Indignapolis and Marion county oppose the bill because it would saddle the public with the costliest housing ex- | periment in history. Hazards of the off-balance supply-demand picture in the U. 8. today—primary° inducement to inflation—are {illustrated by these Newscharts, based upon figures from the office of war mobilization and reconversion. Although a higher cost of living levels off to some extent the greater incomes of 1946, the increased purchasing power as shown at upper left represents a tremendous demand for goods. That the demand still cannot be adequately filled is illustrated by

charts above, which show that, while some durable goods are being turned out at a rate greater than the 1940-41 average, some items are far from plentiful. Note that the categories which are still below 1040-41 production are the ones which have been most directly affected by major strikes during the immediate post-war period. Shipment of food abroad for alleviation of famine in many parts of the world, what President Truman calls “an impressive record,” is shown at left. Continuous shortages abroad assure that the relief program will have to be continued for at least another year.
