The 56-year-old industrialist, promoter of 19 Illinois companies that were awarded $78,000000 in war contracts, was at one tme a motion picture producer, a New york City police official, a real estate operator, and, according to an report, an associate of Dutch Schultz, big-shot beer baron of prohibition days. The FBI report submitted to the Mead committee states that Garsson Was’ arrested and discharged
i;
Investigated Lindbergh Case While employed by the labor department, the report continued, Garsson conducted investigations in the Lindbergh kidnaping, and, as an assistant secretary of labor, investigated naturalization and immigragtion frauds. That was in the early "30s. About the Dutch Schultz connec tion, the report said: “Information was received that] Garsson was connected with Dutch | Schultz and, in the purchase of a| brewery in .New York City, and utilized money advanced by Schultz. It was also reported that Garsson had acted as an emissary to Washington on behalf of Schultz in an endeavor to obtain for him immunity from prosecution of charges pending at that time.” The FBI report added that information was received in 1922 that Garsson “had been involved in prohibition matters,” and that “it has been alleged” that he loaned $100.-| 000 to Ralph A. Day, then prohibition director in New York City.” Held Many Positions “Who's Who in American Jewry” says Garsson was born in London, May 14, 1800, and came fo this country in 1892. The biography lists him as a captain in the special service division of the New York City police, 1917; chairman of the laboratories division of the motion | picture industry in all Liberty loan drives, 1917-18; commissioner of the Georgia state canal commission, 1928, and. special assistant to the secretary of labor, 1931. ‘From 1918 to 1927, the biography adds, Garsson became an independent motion picture distributor and producer. Connected in Bioff Trial In October, 1041, Garsson's name was brought into the Willle Bioff-| George E. Browne trial when Bioff testified in federal court that Joseph Schenck, former chairman of the board of 20th Century-Fox, had told him he bought $200,000 of the firm's stock for Murray Garsson. Bioff and Browne, former bosses of the A.F. of L. International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, later were convicted of extorting $1,000,000 from the motion picture industry. Blof! described Garsson as an investigator appointed by a congressional committee to investigate the film industry and receiverships. “I am ready to prove that $200,000 was given to congressional investigators in the investigation of
the motion picture industry,’ Biofl told Judge John C. Knox. Under cross-examination, Bioff
said Schneck had told him that he had bought $200,000 worth of stock for Garsson and that eventually he would have to convert it into cash for Garsson. Later in the trial, Joseph H. | Moskowitz, 20th Century-Fox east-| ern representative, was questioned | {about government testimony . that | | 8chenck had purchased and then] transferred $202,837 worth of stock | to Moskowitz and Murray Garsson. Moskowitz testified that he still had his stock, but that the $130,000 worth of stock was sold for $110,000 and Schenck got all the money.
'Claghorn’ Issues
Bilbo Challenge
HOLLYWOOD, JULY 15 (U. P.). —Radio's militantly pro-southern “Senator Claghorn” today was prepared, suh, to debate Senator Theodore Bilbo (D. Miss), at any time on their respective values to the South—the South, that is. Actor Kenny Delmar who popularized the repetitious “Senator Claghorn,” arrived here yesterday to make a movie and issued a challenge to Senator Bilbo to a debate | before the latter's constituents. Mr. Bilbo denounced “Senator Claghorn”—a caricature of southern politicians. “Senator Bilbo has threatened to Hive me barred from the air and movies,” said Delmar, “and I hope he tries. Of course, I'm a comedy character, but just the same, I think I represent the South with more dignity and decency than does | Mr. Bilbo.”
