SATURDAY, JULY 13, OFF THE RECORD—
Recent Personal Visit Helps 'l Know' Become Top Favorite
ik By DONNA MIKELS . “I Know” by the Glenn Miller-Tex Beneke orchestra is the top sell-
ing record in Indianapolis today, by Bome of the boys from the Mille
the récord while they ‘were playing at the Circle. clerks the tune was “the best we've ever made,”
around to customers, Apparently Indianapolis record fans ‘agree with the orchestra because the record is on the top-sell-ing lst at most of the local stores. It's had a particularly good run at Pearsons, since that's the spot where the Miller band congregated between shows to hear their faverite wax. Other Favorites Listed “I Know” is a smooth ballad by the Crew Chiefs, deftly arranged to display the brasses against an interweaving string section. The arrangement is as near as the new group has come to the old Miller style. The flip is just an ordinary tune “Everybody Loves My Baby,” brightened considerably by Tex Beneke's scat style vocal. Other best-selling records today are: “My Fickle Eye,” by Betty Hutton (Victor).
“They Say It's Wonderful” by|
Perry Como * (Victor). ‘Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly,” Freddie Martin (Victor). “One More Tomorrow,” by Frankie Carle (Victor). “Siboney,” by Bing Crosby-Xavier Cugat (Decca). Betty Hutton's new number is in her natural roustabout style. The blond bombshell slambangs the lyrics around and Joe Lilley’s orchestra just manages to keep up with her. It was scheduled to be the: No, 2 side to “Wherever There's Me—There’s You,” but the fans are going for the “Fickle” number, Everything that can be sald about “They Say It's Wonderful” ie already been said, except that ity still a best-seller. Its success is: paftially due to Como's large
by
s skill in turning out tunes that click and keep on_ clicking.
Berlin Scores Again
Berlin also turned out another of the bestesellers, “Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly,” In previous weeks the tune has been a Dinah Shore best-seller, but the Martin recording took the lead this week. | “One More Tomorrow,” a vocal ballad by Marjorie Hughes, with Frankie Carle's orchestra, is also a tune that’s been a popular favorite for some weeks, as is “Siboney,” in which two contrasting musical stylists, Bing Crosby and Rhumba King Ciigat, stnike a happy medium. VICTOR—The song that had the nation’s top radio stars exhorting “Lil Abner” not to marry “That Girl,” bas been put on wax by Helen Carroll and the Satisfiers. A blond herself, Miss .Carroll turns Daisy Mae and voices her plea in "tearful hill-billy dramatics. The Satisfiers some harmonizing with her plea. 8till in’ the rustic vein, the songstress and the Satisfiers sing a novelty with a nice lilt, “The Boogie Woogie Barnyard,” on the second side . . . Betty Rhodes, who made her first record with Victor a few dmonths - ago, has made a second offering, “This Is Always” and “Somewhere in the Night.” The vocalist has a nice voice and effortless phrasing, but neither song is outstanding . . . Two “international” recordings are included in Victor's new releases. A polka-waltz combination features Walter Dombkowsky’s orchestra in two of the conductor's own compositions, “The Perfect Evening Waltz,” a slow, dreamy number, and “Veteran's Polka,” a lively tune with a steady rhythmical beat . . offering is “Red Wine Polka,” by Ernie Benedict and his Polkateers. The flip is called “Cocktail Waltz," but it moves at a polka pace . .
COLUMBIA — Here's another father-daughter combination featuring Frankie Carle at the piano and Marjorie Hughes on the vocal. The Carle orchestra blends with the vocalist on “I'd Be Lost Without You,” in slow ballad style. For contrast the band offers a rhythm arrangement of “Cynthia's In Love” on the reverse. . .. It's time for one of ‘those all too rare Count Basie releases, and this one’s a red letter special. The Count has waxed “Lazy Lady Blues,” a number by
Esquire Jazz Critic Leonard Feather
and Phil Moore. Jimmy Rushing
sings a gravel-throated chorus
about his gal who was “too lazy even to die”. There's nothing lazy about the Basie fingering, though, or a trombone solo by
pace for the vocal. The’ flip is an

instrumental taken up by the rhythm section and some delicate plano swing by the Count. . . Two Ellot Lawrence records are included in the new releases. Rosalind Patton sings the saucy “Who Do You Love I Hope?” and Jack Hunter is vocalist on “I Know” in the first offering. Better than the vocals though, plano , passages and a tenor-sax solo by Andy Pino.on “Who Do You Love,” and an astounding piano-trombone-oboe combination backing the vocal on “I Know.” , . . The other Lawrence record revives a hit tune of the "20s, “I'll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time.” Jack Hunter sings the tune and the orchestra lives up to its’strange arrangement reputation: with a French horn and oboe duet. The reverse side also features the vocalist, this time on “Strange Love.” . . Kay Kyser and his orchestra show off their vocal talent on twg catchy new tunes. Lucyann Polk does a rhythm rendition of “You're the Cause of it All” The reverse side is a Michael Douglas-Moon-beamers combo on one of the most pleasant of the current tunes, “I Love an Old-Fashioned Song.”
CAPITOL—Get your kicks on the route to your local record store if you expect to get one of the hottest offerings in months, an album featuring King Cole trio. The new album, labeled Volume II, has every chance of achieving the record breaking sales of the first album by the trio. The first album, incidentally, brought the group highest combo awards from Downbeat, Metronome and Orchestra World. This album has eight sides, two more than the first volume, and all of them are numbers the trio does best. The waxes include: “What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry,” “This Way Out,” “I Don’t Know Why,” “I Know That You Know,” “To a Wild Rose,” “I'm in the Mood for Love,” “Look What You've Done to Me,” and “I'm Thru With Love.” High spots of the album are Nat Cole's piano wizardry (the same kind fhat won him an Esquire award), Oscar Moore's ability to make a musical instrument out of a guitar, and bass artistry by Johnny Miller. . , . Johnny Mercer goes Dixieland in “Ugly Chile” (You're Some Pretty Doll), a jazz style ditty in which Mercer wields a mean southern drawl to Dixieland accompaniment by Paul Weston. The flip, “My Sugar Is So Refined, is a made-to-order combination of clever lyrics and strong rhythm featuring Johnny and the Pied Pipers paced by Weston's orchestra. . Andy Russell has something to
of “Pretending,” with the Weston orchestra. For the first time Andy sings with a vocal harmony group, and the result is a highly listenable ballad. The reverse is another first for the popular crooner—the first time he’s ever attempted a rhythm song. Maybe it's beginner's luck, but his version of “Who Do You Love I Hope,” 'is as good as any of the multi-versions of the “Annie Get Your Gun” hit. , , , Margaret Whiting managed to get time out from radio work for two more waxes. “Along With Me,” a pleasing ballad, is combined with “When You Make Love to Me,” one of the upcoming new tunes.

P.).—Dr. Theos Bernard, 36-year-old “white lama” and sixth husband of wealthy Diva Mme, Ganna Walska, prepared today to move out of the luxurious “penthouse of the gods” she built as their home.
