[Undersea Atom Blast Likely To Produce Huge Waterspout

By JOSEPH L. MYLER United Press Staff Correspondent © OFF BIKINI ATOLL, July.10The underwater explosion of the

atomic bomb, scheduled tentatively for July 25, is expected to hurl fragments of shattered target ships nearly two miles in the air, Vice Adm. W. H. P. Blandy disclosed today. ; Adm. Blandy, overall commander of the operations crossroads project, sald after the first “test baker” conference with his officers that the burst in Bikini lagoon will produce a gigantic waterspout. “It is believed,” Adm. Blandy sald, “that a tolumn of water 2000 to 9500 feet in diameter will raise from thé lagoon 8000 to 10,000 feet high.” Commander Roger Revelle, task force one oceanographer, estimated

of joint task force one expect the baker day bomb to produce waves 100 feet high. But the average estimate, he added, 15.70 feet. Adm, Blandy expects this wave action to sink many ships which might otherwise survive baker day. ’ Predicts No Danger “I think there will be considerable damage from wave -action as well ‘as the blast,” he said. “Waves 70
