The (circus is a lot of our childhood dreams come true. And’ last night a huge crowd thronged the Ringling Bros: and Barnum & Bailey big top out at Victory Field parking lot—adults reviving memories, youngsters absorbing sights and sounds. Freed from wartime restrictions, dar. | the 1046 “greatest show on earth” is an amazing spectacle. With bright ‘new costumes, and with great mass-effects that reveal modern showmanship, this latest version of the famous show is less confusing, more impressive than circuses used to be years ago. | There's unity, there's direction in the acts. Two sets of trained sealions, for example, performing on

And yet this super-circus has lost none of the wacky things people love. You should see the clowns-—one with a neon-lighted nose, one who

And with necks primly arched, they gallop, clumpity-clumpitye around the ring in that self-conscious cir-cus-gait best suited for bareback riders and somersault artists. Animals Do Their Part The animals seem as show-con- | scious as the humans, That's what makes a circus. That's why the circus appeals to nearly everybody. For we all have a4 yen. to mérge human brains with animal strength. Like the ancient Greeks, with their myth of the half-man-half-horse centaur, we're fascinated by animals that act almost human. Sealions clapping their flippers in self applause, © apes riding bicycles— those are things we've all dreamed of, and not just you and I, but billions of people for centuries, Out at Victory Field, you see all this under the big top with bril-
