"| dence already was 19 years a town.
Until the 1850's, when the railroads pushed west and bypassed the community, it thrived. Business Dwindles Steamboats regularly tied up at the docks until the rails took away the traffic. Then less and less business came to the wool carding mill, the grist mill; the tannery, the distillery and the hat factory, Today Water st. is grown up in weeds and the last remains of the docks have disappeared. But the memories are there and so are some of the descendants of pioneers who wrested their safety at the expensé of the Indians’ freedom. The very Birth of Independence is tied in the pattern on the warp and the woof of American history. A deposed half-breed Pottawatami chief, Zachariah Cicott, whose father was French, platted the town in 1827. Earlier the Indians had called it Pottawatami Springs, and near here gathered the red warriors of Tecumseh's confederacy. The United States was about to defend its new-won freedom in the ‘War of 1812." Tecumseh had bandgd the Indian nations to drive the hated paleface from the territory of Indiana to beyond the mountains, Abetted by British

flowed freely in the Indian camps. Knives, tomahawks, rifles, powder and shot were givéli the Indians. Cicott made plain his preference for the American over the Brit. isher, and he was deposed. But when the day came that Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison, later president, crushed the braves of Tecumseh and, his brother, the Prophet, Cicott, was there in the midst of battle. He
had become a scout for Harrison.’
Principally through his efforts, the
' {nondescript band of regulars and
frontiersmen was led through the wilderness safe from ambush. Where Independence got fits name, no one seems to know. Cicott set up a trading post at Pottawatami Springs shortly after the Indians had been defeated nearby. Perhapg this portion of the second war for Independence. gave the half Indian, half Frenchman the town's name. Surely he and others fought for it.
