FINDS MEDICAL USE ‘FOR CURARE POISON

| | | { |

(Continued From Page One)

SAN FRANCISCO, June 28 (U.| |P.).—Curare, a favorite murder | poison among the mystery story | writers, has proved increasingly | valuable to the medical profession during the war years in the treatmuscle

ment and relaxation of

| spasm and rigidity, the American | Neurological association was told yesterday. Describing various possible uses of curare, Dr. Edward B. {Schlesinger told the nation’s top | neurologists that it must be han|dled with care and that its useful{ness “is markedly limited in spite lof a sound physiological basis.” But he reported, on the basis of extensive experience, that curare, as a muscle relaxant, has assisted in the direct treatment of cases manifesting muscle spasm, spas-| ticity, rigidity, dystonia, or a combination of these. Curare is the dried aqueous extract of a vine found generally in, South America. Natives have long used it as a poison on the tips of their combat arrows. More recently Agatha Christie and other writers enfployed it for fictional homicide. Dr. Schlesinger said the toxic ef- | fect of curare was avoided in treat-| ment by suspending it in wax and | oil. This mixture was administered to patients in 2000 injections “with- | out any alarming toxic manifesta- | | tions,” Dr. Schlesinger said. |

the

| Russia. They could not immediately |explain why tooth-shy Russians did not also need incisors and canines. | Pending formulation of a sales {plan, the teeth—62,000 mouthsful if {they were properly distributed—are 'in storage at Louisville, Ky.,: the | officials said. War. assets once had plenty of | |teeth in sets. But the veterans ad- | ministration, exercising its priority, |

{snapped them up.
