TIMES SERIAL
THE STORY: One stormy night two mysterious strangers bring a badly injured boy into Receiving while Sally is on duty. They try to leave Without any explanation but Dr, Willoughby calls the police. After the suspicious characters have been taken to headquarters, the lights in the hospital go out. Sally and Margaret are alone in the darkened Receiving room when they heak a shot, An unknown man enters, tells them to remain where they are if they wish te | avold unpleasant complications, then disappears. The lights © on again but there is no track of him. Sally sa she'll never forget his voice. Dr, Willoughby admits there probably is a connection between the two incidents.
CHAPTER TEN
EVEN THOUGH the hour was approaching midnight there was nothing especially weird, or” disturbing about the Receiving Room tonight. Sally Maynard stood before a window that faced the valley in which Lintonville slumbered. It glowed softly beneath a brilliant moon and myriad stars. Cars and trucks passed the hospital, slid silently down the long hill: to the city and disappeared for a space to be seen later ascending the winding incline on the opposite side. The sight always fascinated Sally. She loved to watch those speeding monsters on their journey into the unknown, LJ ” ” “I DON'T suppose we shall ever know who that stranger was,” Margaret Adams said almost regretfully | now that time had subdued her terror of two nights ago. “I wonder who he ‘was and what it's all about.” Sally turned from the window and shook her head. *I still think he's someone local—perhaps the front—this end of the gang of thieves. Oh well, anyway I'm glad they discovered that boy's family— or those who are acting, in his family's place. The police made short work of that affair, didn't they?” “A refugee,” Margaret mused. “No wonder the English have the idea the United Statef is peopled almost entirely with thugs and Indians, But just the same, Sally, I can’t understand why Ris guardians were so ready to believe him a thief.” . 2 ” “AS I heard the story,” Sally said, “Dean was homesick — had been for months. He has wanted to go back to England. He was so determined, that his foster father has worried for fear he might even run away, so a week ‘or more igo when he failed to appear at breakfast one morinng, they thought he may have started, perhaps, for Canada. “Mr. Winston got in touch with the authorities and the border was watched, also all ports of embarka< tion. He felt that Dean was just the lad to try tp stow away in some outgoing ship. It wasn’t until several days passed that the robbery was discovered. “So if they did believe Dean guilty, it wasn't for very long. I'm

nothing to do with it—that they were merely members of the searching’ party and didn't even know the other three. I don't know— I can’t believe .they are entirely innocent, And, what is more, neither does Sgt. Trimble.”
Sally asked. “I have been wondering. It didn't seem to me the police could be so gullible.” “Don’t worry. They'll ferret it out,” the resident assufed her with quiet confidence.
