FATHER QUIZZED IN BABY DEATHS
Picked Up bv by Police in Dazed Condition.
REDWOOD CITY, Cal, June 27 (U. P.).—Vorhes Newton, 24-year-old glazer, was brought to the San Mateo county jail early today for further questioning about the clawhammer murder of his two infant | daughters. Newton was brought here from) Auburn, Cal, where he already had undergone questioning, Authorities sald Newton had not confessed. Boaked to the skin and bleeding copiously, Newton was picked ‘up yesterday by a tourist as he wandered along the shores of Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe. He had been sought since the. bxutally scarred bodies of the two children were found Tuesday in a lonely ravine near San Mateo, Cal. The tourist, P. A. Hawkins, Oceanside, Cal., drove Newton to a Lake Tahoe doctor. Marilyn Laird, & nurse, recognized the disheveled, dungaree-clad 24-year-old coast guard dischargee from his resemblance to newspaper pictures,
She immediately notified Lake | Tahoe police. Later he was taken to Auburn, | Cal, where he told Placer and San | Mateo county officials a weird tale of a two-day mental blackout, Meanwhile, his 21-year-old wife, Lorraing, who was found Tuesday wandering near the spot where the children’s bodies lay hidden under a tangle of weeds, was in a semicoma in San Mateo hospital, 150 miles west of here. She babbled incoherently of the Newton family’s Monday outing which cluminated in the double slaying. The young mother had been beaten severely, possibly with a clawhammer, and was unable clearly to remember anything that had happened, Physicians forbade authorities to question her further and gave her a 50-50 chance to recover, Newton told the Placer county attorney, C. BE. Trindall, and Fred Wyckoff, chief deputy San Mateo county attorney, that his memory
# was blank from Mongay until early | Tuesday. | “The first thing I remember, since Monday afternoon, was when I awoke this Wednesday morning in| 8 Reno, on a park bench. It was| Just across the street from the)
court house,” he said. “I bought a bus ticket to Salt Lake and then exchanged it for one to Lake Tahoe.” He said he hoped to hitchhike
cisco. When questioned about his aetivities Monday, he told the officials he had left his Alameda, Cal., home! with his wife and two daughters Barbara Ann, 3, and Carolyn Lee, seven months, in a borrowed car! from a San Francisco doctor's office. He said that they changed their
{minds dnd decided to go to the
beach and also stop at San Bruno and look at a home they planned to buy. He said he remembered reaching Tanforan race track, en route to San Bruno, then he turned right {and hgaded for the beacH. “After that I don't remember much unti Reno except a lot of water along the ocean,” he added.
