FELT IN FRANCE
Scientist Hints at Danger of World Destruction.
By PAUL GHALI Times Foreign Correspondent PARIS, June 26-Operation Crossroads, a daily front-page feature in the French press, has suddenly assumed--at least for the French layman-—the aspects of an experiment possibly threatening the world's existence,
Robert EsnaultPelterie, famous engineer-scientist, was responsible | for this bombshell {when he declared before a meeting of his colleagues at the French Academy of Science that his research had shown es that water as well Mr. Ghali as uranium could produce atomic reactions. All deep-sea submarine explosions should be prohibited until the full reaction of water to atomic bombs had. been studied in the waters of a continental lake, Es- { nault-Pelterie averred.
Modifies Scare
| writer, Esnault-Pelterie said that |if ocean water reacted to atom fis-
sion as uranium, the world might, in 40 minutes, be transformed into| nebula, However, he immediately modi-| {fied this terrifying remark by say{ing that, in the tables of chemical |reactions, he had discovered three in which water reacted like uranium, but he did not know fully the conditions necessitated by these chemical changes. The scientist added that he felt certain that these conditions were known to the scientists experimenting at Bikini, but that mistakes could arise in the best ynathematical calculations.
Cites Smyth Report
As proof that even the world’s foremost scientists in the atomic domain could not be absolutely sure, Esnault-Pelterie cited the Smyth atomic report in which American scientists admitted that they had no means of controlling all atomic reactions. This report, as cited by EsnaultPelterie, said that it cannot be forgotten that theoretically several nuclear reactions can be utilized to liberate energy. Actually, scientists do not see any means to control reactions other than those consisting in fission. Calls It Common Sense
Esnault-Pelterie described his warning as prompted by commonsense more than actual scientific certitude. And, although the man-in-the-street may not have felt too confident after reading of Esnault-Pel-

TIMES SERIAL
THE STORY: One stormy night twe mysterious strangers bring a badly injured boy inte Receiving while Sally is. on duty, They try to leave without any explanation but Dr. Willoughby oalls the police. After the suspicious characters have been taken to headquarters, the lights in the hospital go out. Sally and Margaret are alone in the darkened Receiving room when when they hear shot, An unknown man enters, tel them to remain where they are if they wish to avoid unpleasant complications, then disappears. The lights go on again but there is no trace of him,
CHAPTER NINE
SALLY closed the door and returned to the others. “I don't suppose we shall ever find out,” she said regretfully. “I hate practical jokes—if that's what it was; but what else could it have been? He must have been terribly wet.” ! ot She fled to the corridor and examined the floor, Fresh footmarks were clearly shown mounting the stairs to the foyer and on to the front door which was now locked. That, in itself, was odd. That front door was never locked. She turned to the others who had followed. “There! See the footprints? He came in this door— probably just before the lights went out.” “We night both have been murdered!” Margaret breathed, shuddering with dread. » n ~ “NOW WHO on earth would want to murder you, Maggie?” Doctor Hallock demanded. “Don’t get mor- | bid ideas. Just the same though,| I intend doing a bit of investigating | when it gets light. This whole af- | fair is most unusual—in a town like Lintonville, especially.” He opened the front door and| looked out. Nothing was to be seen. | Wind, cold and wet, roared into the vestibule and he hastily shut it again, turned the key in the lock and led the way back into Receiv- | ing, where he proceeded to lock] that door also. » » » “NOW IN case of fire I should be held for murder — certainly for negligence,” he told them. “How about the boy?" Sally asked. | “Is he going to be all right?” i “I imagine so,” the doctor said. “He's still unconscious and will probably remain so for some time. | A bad concussion. Otherwise he should come along all right. He will probably be lame for some] time though. | “His foot and ankle were pretty | badly smashed. Looks to me like] the work of a hit and run driver—| unless, of course, the thugs who brought him in are the culprits. Doc doesn't think so. He figures they're the tools—of a gang, per-| haps. Just what gang he wasn’t prepared to say—yet. Fine looking lad. Nice features—good hands.” “I hope they get the beasts who! are responsible” Sally said fiercely.| “I wonder if there's any connection | between—" | i

Maynard. Between you, you could write a really blood-congealing scenario. Maybe make a million. Who knows?” Sally stiffened and Margaret Adams said stanchly: “I don't think it's so ridiculous. Maybe this stranger was the perpetrator of the foul deed—a guilty conscience and all that. Had to follow up and see how it ended. ' Could be, you know —only there's the shot. How does that come into the picture?” “You tell me,” Doctor Hallock

man--quite different from either of those two with the boy.” She knew Doctor Hallock’s amused eyes were-on her and went on: “It puzzles me that he knew where the door of Receiving was located and that the door was locked. You see it was absolutely dark in here. The lights were out.” » » » “OH, there are people who can see quite well in the dark, Maynard,” the resident explained, thus quashing her theory of a practical joke by a hospital employee. “Of course, he may have been lurking around the grounds for some time before. the lights went out.” “A fine night to lurk,” Doctor Hallock said and for some reason Sally felt better. “We'll get the police in on the case and without doubt it will be straightened out in a matter of hours,” Doctor Willoughby said with conviction. And now morning came on apace —a gray wet dawn—and at 7 o'clock Sally and Margaret welcomed their relief. At breakfast neither mentioned their experience of the night before and after. the meal they went up to their rooms in the Annex and to: bed.

“Just the same—" Sally began; but the resident entered and she said nothing more. “Why not take Doc into your confidence, girls?” the interne suggested. “He might even have the solution already worked out.” It was Margaret Adams who told
in deep thought. His “clear blue eyes stared at her for a long moment before he said firmly: “No doubt it ties up with this other.” Sally threw a triumphant glance at the younger doctor who grinned and winked at her in reply. She bit her lip and blushed furiously. ” ” n “WOULD YOU know the voice again?” the resident asked, his face wandering from one to the other. Margaret shook her head. “I was too scared,” she confessed. “I—I think I should, Doctor,” Sally said. “It was the voice of breeding—at least of am ‘educated
