Here is the state platform adopted today by the Democratic state nominating convention:
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS We believe that the United Nations Organization is the proper step towards a permanent peace, and therefore, wholeheartedly give our approval and support to this organization and favor a strengthening in every possible manner of the covenants of the United Nations Organization to the end that the slaughter and destruction of war may be forever abolished from the face of the earth.
VETERANS We condemn the outrageous refusal of the Republican state administration to: discharge its full responsibility to the Indiana veterans and their dependents; for its failure to pass legislation requiring the several departments of state government to restore positions to all state employees who answered the call to arms; for its failure to grant a reasonable adjustment in veterans’ compensation; for its failure-to pass a Veterans Preference act; and for fits failure to anticipate and act upon an obvious. shortage of veteran housing. To discharge the sacred obligation of the people of Indiana to its gallant veterans, we pledge: ONE: A just and reasonable adjustment in compensation to all honorably discharged sveterans of world war IT who were citizens of Indiana at the time of enlistment or induction.
TWO: State aid to educational institutions for adequate low-rental veteran housing. THREE: Expansion of veterans employment service. FOUR: Veteran preference In public office. FIVE: Full co-operation with the national - administration's emergency housing program and the use of every appropriate state facility for the furtherance thereof. AGRICULTURE We pledge to not only continue price and market supports and floors under farm prices, as well as soil conservation, but shall recommend that the congress make them stronger and always voluntary on the part of the farmers as in the past. We recommend that rural electrification be continued and extended where they are developed for the benefit of the co-operator and the general public. ? We favor the continuation of the trade agreement act and the continuation of the crop loans and crop insurance program. We favor sound permanent and effective farm credit for all agricultural purposes. We pledge to continue the policy of extending maximum aid through loans to veterans in order to enable them te acquire family-sized farms as well as for production purposes. } LIQUOR CONTROL We hold it to be self-evident that the recently adopted Republican liquor control plank is meaningless, evasive and deliberately designed to draw the voters’ attention from the unholy Republican liquor alliance, and affirm that it is not founded on sincerity. We condemn the Gates Republican administration for making a political and a personal racket out
tion systems by enacting laws embodying the following principles:
eliminating the two votes now held by the chairman. TWO: Provide that no legally qualified applicant for a license shall be discriminated against for political reasons.
THREE: Restore the Democratic act of 1939 whereby wholesale applicants could appeal to court against denial on political, arbitrary or capricious grounds. . FOUR: Provide heavy penalties for any license holder or person who attempts to intimidate or coerce another licensee in favor of any particular brand of alcoholic beverages. FIVE: Prohibit officers of any political organization, public officials and public employees from having an interest, directly or indirectly, in a permit. SIX: Re-enact, strengthen and enforce the prohibition against solicitation of, or contributions by license holders of political funds. SEVEN: Establish and maintain a state exise police force guaranteed and secured by a strong merit system, EIGHT: Assure full publicity for all commission and local board hearings and decisions. NINE: Restore the constitutional rights of the citizens of the state of Indiana to appeal to the courts for redress in any question involved in the sale of intoxicating beverages. TEN: Provide that the members of the alcoholic beverage commission will be appointed by the govenor from a qualified list of recommendations presented by the state chairmen of the two major political parties. EDUCATION
The Democratic party believes firmly in the Jeffersonian principle that the success of democracy depends upon the enlightenment of the people. It unequivocally supports education to provide equal and fair opportunity to all regardless of race, religion, color or national origin. The Democratic party of Indiana believes the children of this state

| The Democratic party, recognizling the need of its young people for |extended educational and economic opportunity, and recognizing the alarming spread of delinquency among its youth, favors the de{velopment of an additional two |years .of high school training, at appropriate centers, as a part of the secondary school system of the {state, for instruction in vocational training. In this connection, the | party favors extension of the com- | pulsory school age to 18 or until graduation from high school with a minimum school year of nine months.

SEVEN: A law recognizing the rights of public employees to organize unions for the purpose of improving their working conditions. EIGHT: Immediate re-enactment of the suspended laws protecting women and children. NINE: Free text-books for schools.
TAXATION ; We advocate that the financial reserves of the State of Indiana, largely accumulated under Democratic administrations, be carefully conserved. We are opposed to the creation of any new forms of taxation and we pledge ourselves to oppose with all vigor the establishment of any tax in the nature of a sales tax. The Democratic Party pledges itself to oppose any increase in state taxes, excepting only such increases as may be necessitated by the discharge of the obligations, due from the State of Indiana to the veterans of world war II. We reaffirm our faith in the gross income tax law, which has reduced property taxes, and we pledge to resist any effort to weaken its provisions. HOME RULE Recognizing the burden + placed upon municipalities to provide for the majority of the citizens of Indiana the greatest portion of their governmental services and the present limitations placed upon our cities and towns in the financing of public works and services, the Democratic Party pledges itself to provide the local communities with the enactment of legislation necessary for those communities to raise the funds required for the discharge of their obligations.
STATE WIDE PRIMARY To eliminate the evils of political bossism and to secure and insure the free expression of the choice and will of the voters of all parties, we favor the State Wide Primary to nominate all township, municipal, county, state and federal offices.
tion of the method of registering in order to become eligible to exercise the right of suffrage through legislation making the precinct committeemen and vice-committeemen of the two major political parties Deputy Registration Officers. We further declare to put an end to the abuses of the “central count” by proper legislation. ELECTION LAW The primary law permits the members of our political parties to name the candidates who will represent the parties in the general election. We propose that the slates of candidates of all parties be printed on the same.side of the same ballot, but that the voter be permitted to vote only for the candidates of one party. No declar-

Having witnessed, in the last elec tion in. the state of Indiana, the attorney general's abuse of the power of his office for political gain, we pledge the people of this state to provide a law making it unlawful for any person holding public office to use the influence of such office for the purpose of interfering with an election.
SELECTION OF THE JUDICIARY Political reprisals against the judiclary are intolerable, Accordingly, to avoid the possibility of the selection of incompetent judges or the rejection of honest and able ones for reasons unrelated to their character and ability, the Democratic party pledges itself to the principle of the nominations.and elections of judges on* a separate ballot, unidentified with respect to political affiliation or party membership. CAMPAIGN EXPENDITURES To insure the integrity of the nomination and election of candidates for public office, we favor legislation which will limit the amount of expenditure of every

BUSINESS The Democratic party has maintained a fair and a consistent position regarding business, always lending & helping hand to the enterprises conducted in the business interests and restraining those motivated solely by avarice and greed. We are alarmed at the encroachment of big business upon small business -and fear that the power of big business as exercised by one of its paid lobbyists, the Republican political boss of Indiana, Robert Lyons, will destroy the opportunity of free enterprise for the small business men and women of this state.

From a humble beginning in 1884 Marott's has become the second largest shoe store in the nation. To an ever-increasing host of patrons who recognize the value in the time-proven slogan "It pays to buy shoes at a shoe store"—to the "horizon futura" of a thriving Indianapolis, Marott's pledge continuing faith, gratitude and unswerving loyalty. :
