Times Home Page— HOPE TO REACH " HOUSING GOAL
Progress Made on 1753 of 2000 Units.
Attainment of the 2000-home construction goal set for the county this year by residential builders still is hoped for despite a material famine. : “In spite of difficulties there are 913 permanent homes under construction in the city and rural areas,” Elmer E. Meadley, executive secretary of the Marion County Residential Builders association, said today. The 840 temporary dwelling units obtained by the city’s emergency housing group and the 913 “homes under varying stages of construction, account for 1753 units. Lumber Still Short
Mr, Meadley reported lumber is still the most critical item on the material shortage list but contractors’ requests to do more expediting on the shortages led him to believe production would increase in several months. - He said the recently increased ceilings on some types. of lumber had not produced any additional lumber here. He cited one local builder who had to purchase lumber from eight different sources to build one home. He added the pressure for finished homes this year may force some builders to complete homes in the winter. In normal times, builders try to have exteriors and roofs completed so only inside work must be done in cold weather.
Government Assailed
Meanwhile, the county builders association continues to lash at the federal government's “attempt to perpetuate its control and domination of the private home building industry under the guise of the veterans’ housing emergency program.” A. H. M. Graves, association president, charges the recently enacted Patman bill and the public housing Wagner-Ellender-Taft bill “would not produce houses for veterans but would establish the FHA and the NHA as permanent programmers and constructors of subsidized housing at the taxpayers’ expense.” Mr. Graves has contended the home building industry wants the government to encourage the building materials industry to insure an “adequate flow of lumber, bricks, nails and other building materials presently holding up the hundreds of thousands of privately built housing units for veterans.”
ROOF MATERIALS
The finish for the outer coating of roofs may be any one of a number of good substantial materials—
_ THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES [TIMES SERIAL—-
THE STORY: Sally Maynard, lar. with both patients and sia of Linton Memorial hospital, is considered a model nurse. She discourages the attentions of interne Jim Hallock, r minding him that friendship between Internes and nurses is strictly. against rules, ,
CHAPTER 6 DORA EYED HER companion curiously as she poured herself more coffee. “What ails our ladykiller, Sally?” she asked slyly. Sally shook her head. “Ladykiller?” she repeated. “I never thought of him so. But then, I never thought very much about him anyway. There's no room in my busy life for men—internes especially.” “Is that what he wanted? A place in your life, Sally?” the other teased. “Is that why he was so pleased with himself? Apparently he doesn’t believe in taking ‘no’ for an answer. You might do worse, you know, darling.” ~ » » “OF COURSE not, And don't be ridiculous, I merely informed him he shouldn't be up "here. That, speaking for myself, I felt rules were made to be followed and that we—every one of us—had no least intention or desire to break them for him or anyone else.” She spoke sharply and Dora Bronson gulPed in her cup. “Well, no need to get huffy about it,” she jibed. “And you can speak for yourself, my dear, and only for ydurself. You may enjoy obeying Sunderlin’s. heathenish old rules but the rest of us aren't so keen about them. ” ~ » “JIM HALLOCK'S a darned nice fellow and I know any number of girls who would give their eyeteeth —even risk their caps—for a chance to break those silly old rules—with him.” Sally laid an affectionate hand on her companion’s arm. “I don't mean to be stuffy, Dora,” she said seriously. “But you know the average interne is merely out for a good time —no matter what the cost to his companion. I can’t forget Alice Bentley. It was all so unfair. " » » “I KNOW,” the other said quietly, “but hers was the exceptional case. Thompson was a cad and she was a nut to take the rap for him. Whatever became -of her, Sally? And him, too?” “Oh, he married the girl he was engaged to all the time and—I heard Alice did practical nursing somewhere in Ohio until she married.” “I don’t see how Sunderlin can sleep nights knowing what she did to that girl, Sally,” Dora muttered, piling the empty dishes on the tray and carrying them to the dumb-waiter.
” » = “THAT'S DISCIPLINE, my dear,” Sally reminded her and went back

to her patient. As she sat in the comfortable chair before the broad ‘window in: room 214, her thoughts wandered, Was it only two years ago that she, like all the other nurses at Linton Memorial, had become completely enamored of the handsome, beguiling Bertram Thompson? At the time she was still-a mere student nurse and lovely, blonde Alice Bentley had just passed her probationary period. . o » » THEY HAD roomed across the
hall from each other and Alice, who
had numerous brothers and sisters, used to share the boxes of food they sent from time to time, Sally’ hadn't realized how deeply Alice had become involved with the attractive young interne until the night she found her white *and tragic after learning of Thompson's approaching marriage. Sally never quite knew how it happened that Miss Sunderlin learned of the girl's association with him; but the irate superintendent promptly dismissed her from the hospital.

» - SALLY LEFT * and joined the night shift as it assembled in the dining room for breakfast or supper —she could never quite make up her mind which to call it. The night ‘supervisor, Mrs. Alexander, sat at the head of the table and said grace. The night shift was usually too late for morning chapel. Some of the girls were glad of that; while others missed the lift that came from the brief 20 minutes in the shabby but still beautiful little room with its big stained glass window on the east wall, its air of quiet and peace and the reading together from the psalms,
# » ” THIS MORNING Sally, too, was glad she was too late. She was bone and nerve weary and looked forward to bed with almost eager yearning. Her ears were deaf to the chatter that" went on around her and she left the table after the scantiest of fares and hurried to her room in the annex. She slipped into bed gratefully, stretching between the sheets with

» » » IF THOMPSON did anything to soften the blow or tried to defend her in any way, no one ever knew. But after Alice left he was made to feel the disapproval of the entire staff, not excepting the doctors and departed at once. The affair had made a lasting impression on 19-year-old Sally Maynard and she vowed never while she was in the hospital to allow herself to become interested in men —especially internes. ~ » » PERHAPS THAT was one reason for her popularity with the staff— the superintendent in particular, although Sally’s uncle, Dr. Ferdinand Maynard, dead these many years, was the bond that Miss Sunderlin stressed. The night wore on and Sally sighed gratefully when her relief arrived at 7.
