REDS" ACTIVE
ndenerdence for for Island Is Avowed Goal. By JOHN A. THALE
Times Foreign Correspondent SAN JUAN, Puerto Rice, Juhe 21: —Communists have hit the comeback trail here with “Independence for Puerto Rico” as their avowed No. 1 cause. Resumption of activity has been linked with the return to the island of a number of political leaders from varying periods of absence in New York and Cuba. To the banners of the still numerically weak Communist party have been attracted many members of the old Yankee-hating Puerto Rican Nationalist party, which flourished a decade ago, Agents:of the federal bureau of investigation are by no means unaware of what is going on. So far, however, agents in the San Juan office content themselves with re{marking non-committally that they | are giving the same attention to Communists “that we would give to any other group of lawbreakers or potential lawbreakers.” Philippines Eyed The status question has been the |burning issue for months. Puerto Ricans, with their eyes on what is happening to the Philippines, want “to do something about their own
future. They have been arguing vociferously among themselves over whether they want independence like the Philippines got; statehood like Hawaii has asked, or dominion status. Independence seems to be the most popular idea. Recently returning here from Cuba was Juan Antonio Corretjer, one of the group of nationalist leaders who were sentenced to the Atlanta penitentiary in 1936 for plotting to overthrow the U. S. government in Puerto Rico by force of arms.

But, if federal officials and other | political groups are not taking cur-| rent Communist activities too seri- | ously, there is another group which | lis, It is the Puerto Rican Sugar | | Producers’ association, whose mem- | bers are big producers of this tropi-
