Gems, Relics
The sensational theft of the Jewels of Hesse revives the question: What has happened to some other royal treasures of Europe? WHILE SOME of the most ancient and precious royal relics were tossed about on the stage of history in world war II, and such treasure hoards as the jewels of the house of Hesse have even been involved in crime news, all these gems and hoards are dwarfed in
value and significance by the unique imperial treasure of the Hapsburgs.
For over a thousand years most of Europe's most fabulous gems and relics were absorbed into this giant accumulation of wealth and glitter as if they had beeri magically attracted by some giant magnet. The pre-war visitor to the long row of treasure chambers in Vienna known as the weltliche schatzkammer, or “temporal treasure chamber,” was almost stultified by the impact of crown after crown, jewel after jewel, flanked by rows of ceremonial swords covered with precious stones, coronation robes embroidered by hands that withered a thousand years ago and objects of art matchless through the

ages. » s n THE AMAZING migrations of most of these objects are only in keeping with thé almost legendary reputation of the Hapsburg treasure, of which they formed part. The nucleus of the hoard orig|inally belonged to the ancient line {of Hohenstaufen emperors. They bore the “holy Roman crown” for centuries, before an obscure and almost penniless little man who suffered from the gout, one Rudolph. count of Hapsburg, was crowned Roman emperor in 1273. Rudolph founded the long and illustrious line of the Hapsburgs, destined to become not only the | most powerful but by far the rich- | est royal house in the world. | 8 8% 8 | WHEN Hohenstaufen married Constantia of Sicily in the twelfth century A. D. he inherited the fabulous treasure that had been amassed by the Norman rulers of that Mediterranean island kingdom. One hundred and fifty mules carried the priceless hoard across \the Alps to the Rhine, With the exception of one piece, the entire collection of coronation vestments {and swords subsequently used by the Hapsburgs, right up to the cor|onation of the last emperor Charles, in 1917, this ancient Sicilian treasure.

OUR B-20s had to turn this church into rubble to. help force Hitler to his knees. For centuries a part of the treasure, including the crowns and coronation vestments, was kept in a shrine suspended on a powerful chain high above the choir, while the jewels were locked inside a niche of the upper vestry. Until 1523, when Neurnberg converted to| = the Reformation, the treasure was shown to the people once each year on the 14th day after Good Friday. Then came the French Revolu~ tion, with its triumphant armies sweeping eastward through Europe, soon followed by the ambitious conqueror Napoleon,

s » =" A NEW SERIES of hectic shifts ‘and transfers of the Hapsburg treasure followed. At short inter vals, it was moved from Nuernberg to Prague, then to Vienna. During the flight a number of rare objects, including the emperors’ jewel-cov-ered spurs, several bishop's croziers and some coronation vestments of priceless value were lost. > Then came Napoleon's conquest of Austria, preceded and followed by rapid shifts of the Hapsbur treasure. In 1805 it went to Budapest; in 1809 deeper inside Hungary. In 1813, while the fate of nations was being decided on the outskirts of Leipsic, the fabulois Hapsburg hoard was on board a ship anchored in the Danube just outside Vienna, ready to sail down the river into Hungary and safety once again.

un s ” THE CRUSHING /defeat of Na- |; poleon at Leipsic enabled his reJuctant father -in -law, Emperor Francis II of Hapsburg, to unload the treasure again and restore it to the imperial vaults with a sigh of relief. Then came Hitler. As the third reich went down amidst the rubble of its cities, the legendary treasure was hastily transferred to Germany | § and hidden deep down in the shafts | & of a number of abandoned mines. n ” ” THE FATE of some unusually |# important relics still is shrouded in |: mystery. % Some are ‘more or less directly linked to American trgdition. |!
