PLANE ENGINE OIL FOAM SEEN STOPPED
By Science Service WASHINGTON, June 19.—Foaming of lubricating oils in automobile engines is a minor matter, but in aircraft engines it constitutes a serious problem. However, patent ee | 2 402,487, just awarded, is granted for a method of inhibiting foaming py adding certain nitro alcohols to hydrocarbon lubricating oils and is claimed to be effective. The award is to Augustus H. Bachelder and Fitzhugh 8. Rollins of Berkeley, Cal, and has been assigned to the California Research corporation. The foaming in aircraft engines is caused largely by the rapid-act~ ing pumps used to circulate the lubricating oil. They mix crankcase gases in the oil. The amount of | foam depends upon the oil itself and the compounding agents used in it. The present invention relates to oils which are compounded with metal salts of organic acids.

KEOKUK, Iowa, June 19 (U. P.). —A flash flood here tonight caused the Mississippi river to rise more than two feet above flood stage and
may cause the closing of many industrial plants located below the Keokuk dam. A late report showed the water was at 14 feet .and still rising. Managers of the factories indicated they probably will have to close unless the waters recede tomorrow. The flood caused waters to back up into the Des Moines river.
