Senator Bankhead, who was 73,! died yesterday at the Bethesda, | Md, naval hospital of “cerebral thrombosis complicated by pneumonia.” He was taken to the hospital May 24 after he suffered two heart attanks while attending a senate banking committee hearing on legis- | lation to extend OPA. | Mrs. Bankhead and their son, | | Walter, were at the ‘bedside when the leader of the senate cotton bloc | and uncle of actress-Talullah Bankhead succumbed. | A native of Moscow, Ala, where he was born July 8, 1872, Senator Bankhead was elected to the senate {in 1930 and was serving his third | term, which would have expired in | January, 1940. He was a lawyer be- | fore he became a senator. In 1944, he received 98 votes for the vice presidential nomination at the Democratic national convention. | Senator Bankhead was known us the “father” of the cotton control act—once a part of the New Deal's agricultural adjustment administration. He performed valuable services for southern interests, particularly cotton, during his 15 active years in | the senate.

5 TECH CUSTODIANS WILL BE HONORED

Five custodians at Technical high school who are.retiring will be honored at an informal party tomorrow afternoon in Liberty grove on the campus. The five men are Oliver H. Conger, night watchman for 28 years; Jess Stone, fireman with 28 years of service, 20 of them at Tech; David C. Ryker, custodian of the West residence for 16 of his 18 years of service; L. M. Hiatt, custodian of the Annex with 23 years credit, and Sam M. Fischer, custodian of the lunchroom with 22 years of service. Special guests will include John E. McGaughey, superintendent of the buildings and grounds of the Indianapolis public schools; Ted Hall, supervisor of custodians of the city schools: H. H. Anderson, principal at Tech, and Horace E. Boggy, vice principal at Tech, in charge of buildings and grounds. Col. Will H. Brown, military property custodian, will be master of ceremonies.
