labout a month “ow,” Anthony Drexel Duke said, “and I have .colJ|lected already about $200.” Prominent People Join Mr. Duke, whose blood is as blue as ink, helped to organize the club after Printer Herman Jaffee, who weighed in at 289, thought up the idea. The two have signed up such noted names as Newbold Morris, former president of the New York city council and one of the losers to Mayor William O'Dwyer in the last election; Col. Anthony J. Drexel, the marine expert on use of the bayonet; Mike Jacobs, the fight promoter; Joe Louis, the heavyweight champ, and ~ Billy Conn, the challenger—along with such top-notch, Wall Street lawyers as Charles S. McVeigh and John Jackson. “Most of those names were lined up just for the publicity angle and to help put the idea across,” young Duke admitted. a good 10 pounds, “We went to the president of a chain store restaurant here in New York,” Mr. Jaffe explained, “and we asked him to cut down his three-decker sandwiches to two decks. He sold around 60,000 a day, and vou can figure out how much bread that saves up.” So the president liked the idea and he said, “All right, I'll do it.” Then brothers Jaffe and Duke slipped in their killer-diller punch.
