CHAPLAIN GIVEN. HARVARD HONOR

William D. Cleary Receives Master of Arts Degree.

By EMMA RIVERS MILNER Times Church Editor Chaplain Willlam D. Cleary of Indianapolis today received ' the honorary degree of “Master of Arts” at the 205th commencement of Harvard uni oh versity. il Chaplain Cleary, Ww h © served as head of the army chap- °* lains’ school both at Ft. Harrison and for three years at Harvard, was thus cited at = the degree pre- D4 sentation: “A welcome W. D. Cleary guest during three years of war, Harvard honors him and the army chaplains whom he trained.” The former head of the chaplains’ school will be retired from the army in July with the rank of brigadier general. In addition to his army title, Chaplain Cleary is a monsignor of the Roman Cathove church. But he will tell you in his * Irish brogue that he most enjoys being called “Father,” the salutation to which he became entitled when he was ordained a priest of the church many years ago. Came From Ireland Father Cleary came from Ireland to the diocese of Brooklyn (New York) and from there joined the army chaplaincy in the world war 1. He continued in the service and was made _head of the chaplaincy school when it was re-established at Ft. Harrison about the time the United States entered world war II. He made friends in Indianapolis and gave many talks during his sojourn at Ft. Harrison. In fact, he likes the city so well that he purchased a farm on N. Arlington near the fort and will live there during his retirement.
