1U, S. FIGHT TO HELP VETERANS PRAISED
The U. 8. justice department's role as protector of G. I. rights was praised, today by Searcy L. Johnson, head of the department's veterans’ affairs section of the claims division, before the American Legion executive committee. Interpreting the recent supreme court ruling that returning servicemen do not have “super seniority” rights in employment, he said the decision went a long way to clarify job positions for former G. L.'s. He predicted many more problems dealing with veterans will have to be ironed out in courts and said Attorney General Thomas Clark would be aggressive in his efforts to see that veterans get a square deal. Meanwhile, the Legion prepared to honor the memory of the late Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt Jr, veteran of both world wars and one of the organization's founders. Mrs. Roosevelt was to arrive here by plane this afternoon to unveil a bronze bust of the general in the Legion national headquarters. Four recipients of the Legion's distinguished service medal were selected last night. They are: Cordell Hull, former secretary of state; J. Edgar Hoover, FBI director; Ma). Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, selective service director, and Bob Hope, screen and radio star. They will be honored at the Legion's national convention this autumn in San Francisco. The verdict, returned after more than two weeks of trial, sentenced the men to serve one to 10 years in state prison and disfranchised them for two years. : Hackley, who last night asked a 10-day delay in execution of the sentence so-he-could-appeal-to the state supreme court, today changed his mind and asked to be sentenced immediately. $99 50 Welch, who was on parole in a . similar case when the indictment was returned last September, was returned to prison six months ago pending the trial. He will be returned to state prison immediately to serve the new sentence and finish his parole term. Saul I.
