on the best selling list, every home in Indianapolis should have two or three of the records. And yet, today, the majority of Indianapolis record stores still nominated “Gypsy” by the Ink Spots, Perry Como or Louis Prima, and *“Prisoner of Love” by the Ink Spots or Como, as their best selling platters. Five other recordings placing right in back of the two best-selling ballads are: “Laughing on the Outside” by Dinah Shore (Columbia). “Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly” by Dinah Shore (Columbia) or Jimmy Dorsey (Decca). “Surrender” by Perry Como (Victor). “They Say It's Wonderful” by Perry Como (Victor) or Frank Sinatra (Columbia), Re-Bops Still Surging “Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop” by Tex Benecke-Glenn Miller (Victor). Perry Como and Dinah Shore have been consistently waxing top records for the last few months and the new releases indicate more of the same. Como’s “Surrender” features his usual smooth vocal, with a pleasing orchestral background. The flip is the old favorite, “More Than You Know,” probably due for something of a revival due to the Como influence. “They Say It's Wonderful,” the other Como hit, and Shore's ¢“Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly” are both tunes from the Broadway hit, “Annie Get Your Gun.” These two and some other good tunes from the

show are all from the pen of Irv-

od Parade for 6th Week

By DONNA MIKELS Some eccentric in Indianapolis must be pouring molasses over reecordings of “The Gypsy” and eating the platters for breakfast. And then, we suspect, nibbling on *‘Prisoner of Love” for desert. That's the most logical explanation we can think of for the sales volume of the two records. Judging from the number of records of both sold in the past six weeks, when they've consistently placed first

Miller platter is the undisputed favorite. A Lionel Hampton waxing, however, is selling almost as well as the Miller recording. Three other records which didn’t quite make the top-selling ranks, but which are definitely favorites, are the lush recording of “You Stole My Heart,” featuring Dick Haymes and Helen Forrest (Decca), and two group numbers, “Route 66” by the King Cole trio (Capitol) and “Just in Case You Change Your Mind” by the [Four Knights (Decca). » - Hot Off the Presses

Just off the presses and up for release soon are these new records: DECCA—Something old and something new are featured on a new wax by ember-voiced Billie Holliday. The torchy-tender new tune is “Don’t Explain,” and the flip is Cole Porter's ever-popular ballad, “What Is This Thing Called Love?’ "as Holliday fans will like it done. , . . Ethel Smith offers two vibrant, vivid sambas “Toca Tu Samba’ and “Dinorah,’ both featuring the Smith flying fingers and the Bando Carioca. . , , Two more “Annie Get Your Gun” hits are now on wax by Leo Reisman and his orchestra. Marjorie Knapp sings both Irving Berlin “I Gots,” —“I Got the Sun in the Morning,” and “I Got Lost in His Arms.” |, . . Unrestrained, uninhibited and unrepressed, Lionel , Hampton throws out live jive from piano, drums and vibes on “Air Mail Special.” I¥s a two-sided 10-inch which leaves you feeling as if the whole thing must have been jet-propelled. + +» “Who Told That Lie?” written by Eddie Cantor, in collaboration with Jack Segaland and Bee Walker, is on record by Connie Boswell and the Paulette Sisters. The reverse side is “I'm Going Make Believe.” Both tunes feature background by Bob Haggart’s orchestra. . . . Bing Crosby and Xavier Cugat Joined forces and the result is “Siboney,” backed by “Hasta Manana” Crosby's - pearly piping and the Rhumba King’s instrumentalizing blend just as well as one their first combined efforts “You Belong to My Heart.” . . , Another new Crosby features the sing king on the kind of tunes he does: best. He effortlessly sings his way | through two perfect Cole Porter | tunes “Night and Day” and “Just One of Those Things” aided by the John Scott Trotter orchestra.
