Columbia's Five Albums Called 'Top Drawer’

FIVE ALBUMS that first charm the eye with their attractive art covers, and then enchant the ear with the glorious music they contain, engage our attention today. They are recent productions of Columbia's recording studios, now brightening dealers’ display stands, and all five are “top drawer,” so to speak. There are two compesitions for solo violin by Brahms and Beethoven, Dvorak's most popular symphony,

‘Kern's great light opera, “Show Boat.” DVORAK: SYMPHONY No. 5 in E Minor (Op. 95), “From The New World,” played by the Philadelphia

[orchestra, with Eugene Ormandy

condugting. (Columbia, M-570, five 12-inch records.) The recent tremendously successful concert of the Philagelphia orchestra at Murat temple lends added mterest to this, their latest recording. “Those who attended that concert will hear again in this album the rich, deep tone so perfectly modulated and controlled, the precision playing combined with warm expressiveness, that so impressed them. Everyone knows and loves the “New World Symphony,” and has heard the story of how its Bohemian composer got his inspiration from hearing Negro spirituals and other American folk music during his sojurn in this country as a teacher in the '90's. Here is a. new recording that will enable music lovers to enjoy it at its best whenever they wish.

BRAHMS: CONCERTO in D MAJOR, for violin and orchestra, (Op. 71), played by Joseph Szigeti, violin, with the Philadelphia orchestra, Eugene Ormandy conducting. (Columbia, M-603, five 12inch records.) One of the three greatest violin concerti in the literature here receives a virtuoso performance from the great Szigeti, perfectly accompanied by Ormandy and his men. It is entertaining, tuneful, appealing music to which anyone can listen. The idyllic opening movement catches on quickly and is easily remembered; the second is much like a beautiful song, featuring solo oboe and violin; and the third, a rondo, sounds like a lively Hungarian dance. Columbia has recorded it well.

WAGNER: LOHENGRIN, Bridal Chamber Scene, (Act III, Scene 2.) Sung by Helen Traubel, soprano, and Kurt Baum, tenor, with the Philharmonic-Symphony . orchestra of New York, Artur Rodzinski conducting. (Columbia, X-261, two 12inch records.) Opera fans will welcome this complete recording of one of the outstanding scenes of “Lohengrin” by one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos of all time, and a top-flight Metropolitan opera tenor. Their voices blend and soar in the swelling music, as Elsa, happily alone with her husband in their bridal chamber, asks the forbidden question about his identity. Rodzinski and his orchestra have given Traubel and Baum a fine accompaniment, and the whole is well recorded. :

C Minor, for violin and piano, (Op. 30, No. 2), and Handel's Allegro from Sonata in D Major, played by Isaac Stern, violim, and Alexander Zakin, pianos Columbia, M-604, four 12-inch records.) These two works stand high on the list of classical compositions for violin and piano, and will please the average listener as well as delight students of those instruments: But interest in this album rainy i ters on the Personality of violinist, Isaac Stern. Born in Russia in 1920, he made his debut at the age of 11, and is. now being hailed as “one of the world's master fiddle players.” This recording demonstrates that he has what it takes, and much will be heard of him.

KERN: SHOW BOAT, all the hit numbers sung by the original cast of the 1946 Broadway revival. (Columbia, M-611, five 12-inch records.) All it is necessary to do to review this album is to list the hits it contains, and name the performers, and it will speak for itself. The hits: “Overture,” “Cotton Blossom,” #Only Make Believe,” “Ol'’ Man River,” “Can't Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” “Life Upon the Wicked Stage,” “ You Are Love,” “Why Do 1 Love You?” “Bill,” and “Nobody Else But Me.” The performers: Jan Clayton as Magnolia, Carol] Bruce as Julie, Charles Fredericks | as Gaylord Ravenal, Kenneth Spencer as Joe, Colette Lyons as Ellie, and Helen Dowdy as Queenie. A thoroughly enjoyable album throughout.—H. W. M.
