TER ce for Secretary Peps Up = GOP Pre-Convention Action

‘By ROBERT BLOEM

Republican pre-convention activities quickened sharply today as two more persons were reported in the running for the secretary of state

With at least 10 names already mentioned more or less seriously, new names injected today were those of Second district Chairman Ira Dixon of Kentland and Frank Cr Tukey of Marion, under secretary to

district name would be injected into the picture should the chairman step aside. Strongest element in favor of the second district bid was that it is the only district not represented among the state's elective offices. The district virtually was “frozen out” of the ticket two years ago when its delegates helped defeat an 11th district supreme court candidate and in turn lost Marion counby support for its own hopeful. Mr, Tukey was not regarded as one of the leading candidates for the nomination although he presumably would have powerful fifth district backing and is known to be close to the Governor.

Hint Yoder ‘Cooling Off

Still leading the field among the earlier candidates, most of whom have been in the race for many weeks, were H. Dale Brown of, Indianapolis and LeRoy (Toby) Yoder of Goshen, chairman of the Public Service Commission and also Republican third district chairman. Mr, Yoder, for a time the “hottest” of the large field of candidates, was reported by party sources to be cooling off somewhat. He was reported to be the tentative choice of Governor Gates. Mr. Brown, who already has one foot in the office by virtue of his post as motor ve= hicle commissioner, is the choice of the Marion county organization. It was regarded as certain that

Governor Gates would be the man to give the nod to one of the can-

Yoder and Mr. Dixon to be the three leading candidates, the choice was not expected to be an easy

Expect Capehart Opposition Should the governor give the nod to Mr. Yoder, observers believed it likely he would face the prospect of coming to grips with U. 8. Senator Homer E. Capehart. Senator Capehart, regarded by many as a po-

disputed party control, would be ex-

pected to fight a Yoder nomination on the basis of an old political feud. The currently unrepresented second district is also the Republican party's leading vote producer in the state. On this basis, supporters of Mr. Dixon or a district candidate of his choice could be expected to demand recognition on the state | ticket. | On the other hand, Marion county | supporters of Mr. Brown are pleadling that the county needs help.

| Seriously damaged by the primary | election success of five anti- {| machine candidates, the 11th dis- | trict group contends it is in seri- \ ous danger in November unless it {gets a “shot in the arm” from the | state organization, presumably the | nominee for secretary of state.
