Scientist Fears
Or Quake After A-Bomb Test
By Science Service ° WASHINGTON, June 4, — An atomic bomb exploded at or’ just beneath the surface of the sea is capable of setting off a major earthquake and causing a tidal wave that will swamp all ships in the region, warns Dr. Anatol J. Shneiderov of the Johns Hopkins university in the new issue of Science. Since the second Bikini bomb some time this summer will be exploded underwater, Dr. Schneiderov’s statements raise anew tHe possibility of disasterous results from the bomb tests, despite official reassurances. Dr. S8chneiderov has calculated the energy released by quantities of high explosives, and finds that 5000 tons of TNT would suffice to trigger an earthquake. The Hiroshima bomb, he reminds was stated to be equivalent to 20,000

tons of TNT. That bomb ‘and the one that destroyed Nagasaki were air bursts, so nothing like their full thrust was exerted ' against the earth. A bomb of that power, the sclentist states, can make a wide crack in the earth's crust if exploded where water will transmit the blow downward. If the crack becomes sufficiently deep, the bottom of it will be very hot, and steam formed by inflowing water will increase the violence of. the reaction, Finally, he says, the “mushroom” of steam and sea-bottom dust from the underwater explosion may surpass the quantities hurled into the air by the eruption of the Javanese volcano Kraktau in 1883, which was the greatest recorded volcanic explosion. The dust cloud may hang in the air for several years, affecting weather all over the world,
