Ayres & Co. and Railroadmen’s Federal Savings and Loan association offer the fullest system of home service. However, the Indianapolis Power & Light Co, the Citizens Gas & Coke Utility Co., the public schools and the Indianapolis Real Estate board also provide a lot of help. The Ayres’ Home Planning bureau occupies a suite on the sixth floor of the store with Mrs, Helen Hall as director. ‘There, Mrs, Hall and her staff, without cost to you, will try to help you solve your problems of house building and arranging. Books containing approximately 8000 different house plans showing the floor layout and the exterior view will be placed at your disposal. Scrapbooks, Pictures Mrs, Hall has compiled - scrapbooks filled with illustrations of varied decoration and furniture arrangements for every room in the house,
She can supply an infinite number of manufacturers’ booklets picturing and describing such products as roofing, doors, heating plants, hardware and kitchen equipment. A dozen or more of the leading magazines dealing with subjects allied with building are available to you. Ome of the most imposing of these is the “Architectural Digest,” which sells for $1.50 per €opy. Other scrapbooks contain clippings suggesting ways to drape that difficult, old four-poster bed you inherited; what silver and glassware to use with what china; and how to divide a large bathroom into two snug compartments by install ing a square, space-saving tub. Easy Does It
In fact, you can submit your house-building or remodeling problem to“Mrs. Hall and she, or a member of her staff, will make an

is thus enabled to sufficiently clarify his ideas to present them to an architect. If, on the other hand, a person expects to purchase a readybuilt house, he can in this way educate himself to do so.” Mrs. Hall and Joseph W. Van Briggle, head of the Rallroadmen’s home service department, often collaborate on projects dealing with better houses for Indianapolis, Mr. Van Briggle warns the prospective home owner that he “may hitch his wagon to a star but come down with too great a bounce if he doesn’t plan wisely. Railroadmen’s, accordingly, attempts to help with that wise planning. It advises the home planner “what to do; when to do it; where to go for various needs, and whom to see.” Free Library Use It invites free use of its extensive library of building plans. And it will see you through the entire experience of getting a new home. Counsel will be given about the size of the ‘investment, the lot, and every step of the actual construction until your dream house becomes a tangible reality, The association's individual interest in the process is the negotiation of the loan, However, it will supply any pertinent information to anybody, even the person who has all the necessary cash in hand before beginning to buy or build a house. The Power and Light Co. is building up its home service depart= ment with Mrs, Harriet West in charge. The service, which became quite small because of the war, deals with every phase of home making and the equipment used. At the gas company, Mrs. Ruth Hynes is the acting director of the home service department. The company sponsors classes and demonstrations in cooking, lectures, movies and information concerning gadgets, tools and equipment used by housewives, The real estate board helps the G. I. to find a home and get it financed according to the G. I. Bill of Rights. Wendell Hicks is chairman of the board's veterans’ com-
analysis and a plan sheet for you. If you cannot call for the material, a letter of explanation will be mailed to you along with it. *“One thing is certain,” Mrs. Hall explained, “the future home owner

WET BASEMENT CAUSE
Surface water that collects near outside walls is the most frequent cause of wet basements. This is likely to be rain water that has spilled over roof gutters because leaders are clogged or has gathered at the ends of leaders that are not connected with draintiles,
CEILING OUTLETS
One ceiling outlet, wall switch controlled, for each 150 square feet of floor area, is the usual standard for recreation rooms. The ceiling
outlets may be omitted provided wall, cove or valance lighting outlets, wall switch controlled, are substituted.
BRACE YOUNG TREES If you want young trees to grow straight and be healthy, be sure to support them with some type of |& good brace as soon as you set them,
Failure to do so will result in strain and damage to the root system the first time the wind blows hard enough to bend the trees.

BASEMENT PLAN
Mindful of the increasing demand for small, yet comfortable ‘homes, planners embodied great economy of construction with high utilization of space in the residencé pictured here. Corner windows are used to advantage and add ‘a touch of balance to the exterior design. Adequate privacy is provided for the sleeping quarters, and the bathroom is centrally located. The kitchen and dinette area is compact and eliminates “mealtime mileage.” A welcome feature is the additional upstairs area which could be transformed into cozy sleeping’ quarters. : |
RECOMMENDS USE OF LIME ON SANDY SOIL
For soil that is sandy and thin or heavy, stiff and poorly drained it is a good practice to spread a thin layer of lime every third year Agricultural lime, which is quick acting, requires special care in application, Gloves and old clothing should be worn to safeguard against the dust particles. Lime will correct excessive acidity ‘in the soil and will release plant food that is in forms which plants cannot use. A mixture of lime and manure should never be. made because chemical action will turn nitrogen into ammonia which will evaporate widths and may be cut to size, into the air. Lime should be applied on freshly dug or plowed land

'Rug Anchor’ Is Back on Market
Wham! And down you go all because of that darned little carpet which slides all over the place and has been a harbinger of lawsuits from unsuspeeting guests for many a year. But there is no need to be a victim of painful falls now that the “Rug Anchor,” a synthetic sponge rubber, non-skid underlay made by Du Pont, is back on the market. This rug underlay clings to slippery floors and is said to lengthen
the life of rugs because it provides » dirt-proof, waterproof lining and will not harbor moths. It comes in 24, 32 and 54-inch

CHAPTER 24 ANN WAS in the kitchen, mak~ ing a chocolate Bavarian cream, when Susie came in from school. “Did you see the doctor?” she burst out, without preamble. Ann opened the . refrigerator door, and shoved the mold inside. “Yes, my Susie, and it's all very true. Picture me as a fond mother if you can.” “Why not?” Susie demanded indignantly. “You'll make a beautiful mother, Mrs. Drake. What the world needs is more mothers like you.” “So nice to be answering a crying need of the world,” Ann murmured. “Are you. going to tell Mr. Drake now?” n o n ANN LOOKED a little impatient. “I thought we had settled that, Of course I'm not going to tell him— not until he gets back. It would be silly.” “I think you ought to tell him,” Susie said stubbornly.-

Which was a fortunate way of putting it, she thought, watching the look of rebellion on Susie's face fading into conviction that Ann was right, at least on that point.
n ” ” THAT NIGHT after Susie had gone to bed, Ann settled down with a new magazine and a cigaret;, but she didn't read. Why shouldn't they adopt Susie? .. Give her a family, and give themselves a head start on one. She could hear Colin teasing ter about it—"“When you go in for maternity, |« you do it in a big way, don't you darling?” But why not? On Susie’s own account, she was awfully good with babies, and they'd have one for her to cope with before too long. But of course,

“I'VE BEEN wondering , . . do you have to have a real nurse for your baby? I'm awfully good with babies, and I thought maybe you'd give me a job. I'd like that an awful lot better than some old office job.
