Mire Crews Take Careful Tests

How much strain is there on racing car tires in the, 500-mile grind? |. Wel, Firestone research engineers have calculated that the right rear or front tires—depending on whether the car is front or rear-

| drives~bears 80 per cent of the car's | weight and thrust ii the turns. | That's what causes the high- =pitehed | squeal.

During the 10-mile qualifying

| runs, the tire crews make accurate

tests on the tire, minutely comput-| ing the wear and the a

| outside temperature. Thus, they |are able to tell drivers just what | mileage to expect in the race.

Contrary to public opinion, tires last longer in the race itself than

[they do during practice and qual- “| ification runs. One reason for this

is that the drivers’ race pace is not so terrific as in practice. Besides that, the track gets a coating of oil

| during the race which makes for a | better driving surface. |

Guard Against

Fire in Garages

The Speedway has taken precautions so that there will be no repetition of the 1941 garage fire. During the Memorial Day race,

| more than 300 fire extinguishers will

be placed .at vantage points. Fire prevention crews will include eight captains and more than 200 men stationed in the stands,.the pits, the parquet seats and the pagoda. Their job will be to look for small blazes. Extinguishers will include large 50-pound carbon dioxide containers for electrical equipment and gas

and oil fires, various-sized carbon tetrachloride extinguishers and large soda-acid type for wood and rubbish fires.

Lest we forget

“This glorious Memorial Day," says Elsie, “‘we mwst not forget those who have sacrificed so much for their country . . . and we must not forget to do everything we can to fur. ther the things for which they made their sacrifice!” For that Memorial Day lunch or dinner, a gener. ous serving of Borden's ice cream will cut down work . . . give you more holiday time. There's a Borden dealer near you.
