‘Coolie Wage' Hinders Cards
NEW YORK, May 24 (U, P).— Baseball's renowned ‘“horse-trader,” President Sam Breadon of the St. Louis Cardinals, who built a ¢championship dynasty on what players called “coolie wages,” was threatened today with loss of the pennant for the second straight season because of his low salary policy, Breadon, badly upset over the loss of three star players, Pitchers Max Lanier and Fred Martin, and Inflelder Lou Klein to the rich Mexican league, tried to be philosophical and said that “even without them we still have a great bail club.” Although they resorted to a different means of showing their displeasure at Cardinal salaries, the desertion of Lanier, Martin, and Klein was likened to last year’s player revolt by the Cardinal brother
battery of Catcher Walker Cooper | and Pitcher Morton Cooper, The missing players still were | given an open door to return by | Manager Eddie Dyer, who said that he would be glad to take them if it was “Okay with Breadon.” “If it is true that they have gone, it is a serious blow to our | pennant chances,” Dyer said. The whereabouts of the players | and Bernardo Pasquel, the vice] president of the Mexican circuit, | who reportedly signed them to fat] contracts still was a mystery. | However, Pitcher Sylvester (Blix) | Donnelly offered a possible clue last | night when he said that “I under- | stand they're speeding toward St. Louis right now in a brand new
