teachers for generations, have done their darnedest to kill it with kindness, You sensed that last night, in about the first third of the play, before all of us in the audience had got, used to the measured, archaicsounding language. There were decorous titters and giggles at some of the none-too-punchy lines our English teacher used to try to make her senior class giggle at in Bethlehem, Pa. high school back in 1922, That sort of thing, plus the naively shrewd observation of the legendary old lady who complained
{that “Hamlet” was full of quota-
tions, at first interferes with appre-
|clation, If “Hamlet” had been written last year by a guy called Joe i | Zilch, we could estimate it better
from the start, For me, the play reached grade
|A intensity in the great scene be-
tween Hamlet and Ophelia. From the play meant business, and the audience, I think, accepted
tit that way and forgot to ‘giggle where you're supposed to.
Somber Setting With a somber, baroque setting that permits all sorts of split-sec-ond alterations, and with vaguely 19th-century costumes (might be Denmark, might be Graustark, might be Zenda), Mr. Evans’ “GI”| version of the play is a cruel melo- | drama of intrigue, murder and revenge., I'll stick my unscholarly neck out to the extent of saying that's probably fairly close to the Bard's purpose. New York production of “Henry IV,” observes that criticism of Shakespeare is stymied by endless tradition, You have to draw comparisons, and you're up against the enormous accretion of what critics have said.in the past. A lot of “Hamlet” needs explanation when the play is read. But when it's produced.as magnificently as Mr. Evans and his company have put it on, it's fine theater. Through much of the second half last night, you couldn't even hear a footnote. Acts Like ‘Real Guy’ Hamlet's lines and long soliloquies make him necessarily declamatory. Mr. Evans manages to take the curse off that by looking and acting like a real guy. First thing you know, you forget high school English and begin to get a bang out of the action. The supporting cast is the best I've ever seen in “Hamlet.” Usually, “Hamlet” is a business of ohe star declaimer, plus a lot of Elizabethancostumed elocutionists. But Thomas Gomez, as Claudius, indeterminately Edward VII or Henry VIII in appearance, is, in every gesture, a no-good character. That impression is a triumph of acting. Lili Darvas (her marvelous and genuine European accent is a fine detail ‘of casting) brings Gertrude to real theatrical life. Harry Sheppard is a. splendidly convincing Polonius, and not ‘just the prolix mountebank so many of his predecessors have been. ‘And Frances Reid as Ophelia and Emmett Rogers as Laertes are both genuine
| people.
Banish Zaniness The Evans production manages to disinfect Ophelia’s mad scenes from most of the usual Ja-de-da zaniness that inspired sentimental Victorian painters. While this version omits such items as the unenlightening gravediggers’ scene, it includes a lot usually left out. So the drama of murder and revenge, of ups and downs—the “wheel of fortune,” in ancient parlance, is pretty complete. Last night's audience was as big and enthusiastic as you ever see at
