Starvation is no longkr a threat. It is a fact, UNRRA says. In Vienna rations are down to 867 calories a day. In Poland, they are eating seed grain.
Gives Committee a Trial Can ‘anything more be done here? Yes. A week ago, in New York, the emergency food committee got started on a delayed nation-wide campaign to collect canned foods for UNRRA distribution. The committee was set up by former UNRRA director - general Lehman, just before he resigned, with Secretary of Commerce Wallace as national chairman. . Director General La Guardia didn’t like the arrangement. He preferred mass buying, But as America's contribution fell short, week after week, Mr. La Guardia decided to give the committee a trial, His attitude toward it still is lukewarm. He would rather buy and ship grain.: He contends there is too much water in a tin of food, Funds Advanced
Mr. La Guardia, however; gave the committee $300,000 for operating expenses, and advanced $500,000 to finance collection, packing and transportation of collected foods. This money will be repaid UNRRA from voluntary contributions.
tion’s mayors to call in chairmen of their old victory clothing committees and put them to work on food. Civie clubs, church groups, boys’ and girls’ clubs will forage for food which can be shipped.
