D. A. R. Urges Constitution Change
ATLANTIO CITY, N. J, May 23
(U, P.).~The 55th continental congress of the Daughters of the American Revolution yesterday urged congress to amend the Constitution to exclude aliens as part of the population in apportioning representation in congress. The resolution, passed umanimously by the delegates, apparently was directed at heavily populated centers such as New York city, where a labor party with large membership among descendants of aliens has elected members to con-
gress. . \ Delegates prepared for a verbal battle on the convention floor today over the issue of banning Negro artists from the society's Constitution hall in Washington. A militant 17-woman committee, formed by Rep. Clare Boothe Luce (R. Conn.), defying D. A R. orders to dissolve, announced it would “stand firm in our fight against discrimination” and would attempt to bring the issue to a vote today. “We cannot recognize any motion which orders immediate dissolution of our committee,” said Mrs. Menna

Woman's Viewpoint a Spinsterhood Is No ‘Plight’
‘Nowadays |
By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Scripps-HMoward Staff Writer | SOME OF OUR feminine writers { ought to see a psychiatrist, For ex- | ample, the one who wrote a piece tor a popular home magazine on the subject of the spinster's plight. Among other foolish statements, she says that men hate: single women. Going on from that point, ws must assume, I suppose, that spinsters and widows are a persecuted group, since they exist outside the zone of masculine approval. What nonsense! On the contrary, single women in our socieiy enjoy extraordinary respect and admiration from American men. They are accepted as individuals, and occupy positions of authority lin the business and professional world. Maybe they don’t like to live { alone, but they do it bravely and | graciously, so that their days are filled with interesting occupations | and rich satisfactions. | - & =» : T SUSPECT many men admire! the single woman who earns her] living more than they do the sheltered wife who never has had to do $0, There is a community of in-| terests between them which the |
knows the effort and reward of toil. The remarks of that writer especially are untimely now when so many fine young girls face spinsterhood because of the shortage of marriageable males. They may miss love, marriage and motherhood through no fault of their own, but because they were fated to live in the time of a great war that sent their potential husbands to die or marry overseas. Exceptions prove the rule so we!
tions, work up a hatred for men just as there will always be a few
{pretty well together in their offices land factories.

Wedding Costs Top A Billion a Year
* By LOUISE FLETCHER Times Woman's Editer The marriage license business in: this country is booming again, ac cording to Mrs, Alexandra Potts, merchandising and research direct or for Bride's magazine, She was {here yesterday and today for a visit at Block's. The number of weddings per year had been tapering off from a 1943 peak of 1,800,000 — hut recently there's been a new spurt of activity in county clerks’ offices, particularly along the Pacific and northern Atlantic coasts, in Kansas City, and right here in Indianapolis. Billion Dollar Business
country’s retailers whose annual “take” on brides is in the neighborhood of a billion and 500 million dollars, Mrs, Potts says that 60 per cent of this goes for home furnishings, but that still leaves a sizeable jack< pot for dealers in feminine fripe peries, flowers and other paraphere nalia, Aside from the financial aspects, romance is booming, too, according to Mrs. Potts. Not just among the voungsters, but among their elders, she adds, pointing out that 80 per cent of the survivors of marital mixups remarry immediately. And, holding out hope for the older bachelor girl, Mrs. Potts ree ports a marked trend in marriages of older women. She says that many “veterans, particularly thosa
