Bloomington Singers Offer Satisfying Performance.
By HENRY BUTLER It takes young volces.to make a really thrilling choir, And the 60-voice Chancel choir from First Methodist Bloomington, heard in a program of sacred music last night at Broadway Methodist church, is a young choir, Directed by their choirmaster, Oswald G. Ragatz, who is also head of Indiana university organ depart-
told, from I. U. music school) did some fine singing.
chureh,’
ment, the youngsters (all, I was!
What young voices may lack in|
power and musical experience, they make up in a poignancy most older voices do not retain, When the Bloomington choir sang «the last stanza of J. B. Dyke's great “Holy, Holy, Holy,” with descant (top soprano obligato) added, the effect was a foretaste of the blessedness most of us probably don’t deserve.
Sponsored by Guild
Last night's program, sponsored by the Indiana chapter of the American Guild of Organists, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the guild. It was a varied and satisfying program. Soloists included Anitra Lyneh, who (I judge from the slightly confusing printed program) did the i splendid rendition of Mozart's “Alleluia,” Barbara Atkins, Joan Smith, Margery Pearce, Stewart White, and two violinists, Donald Neal and Gerald Doty, The predominantly a cappella version of Tchesnokofl’s “Glory Be to Thee” was, I think, a triumph of direction and choral singing. So was James’ “By the Waters of Babylon,” full of difficult modulations and harmonies often like Rachmaninoff. That music is hard to sing.
Excellently Trained
Mr, Ragatz, who was invisible to
| most of the Scottish Rite cathedral audience when he played there as | soloist with the Indianapolis sym-| | phonic ‘choir April 14, was in full | view last night. He plays and con- | ducts with great energy. And he | certainly has an excellently trained choir, The - invocation and offertory prayer were delivered last night | by the the } Rev. Dr. John F. Edwards.
