Even last night's weather couldn't dampen Broad Ripple ardor. A good big audience turned out for “June Mad,” the Broad" Fipple high school senior play: They showed..plenty of enthusi-| asm for the Ryerson and Clements comedy, capably directed by Mrs. | B. | (Richard Kreusser) college friend,

| to spend a week-end at the Wood's.

Friend Has Good Line

Roger has a terrific’ line, which | he explains simply enough: “Make | the older ones feel young and the younger ones feel older.” In no time at all, he has 15-year-old Penny pretty much ga-ga and, of course, temporarily impatient with her pal Chuck's adolescent awkwardness. Incidentally, Maclaren Millholland did mighty well with that awkwardness. He's a good actor. Not altogether unlike “Kiss and Tell,” even to the loudspoken cook (Effie, played by Jo Hayes), the play develops a less sensational sitvation. It's an admirably chosen vehicle for high-school players. Last night's cast all did well. 3

Audience Enjoyed Laugh

We sat fairly far back, having to leave early. It's a little hard to hear

{in that gymnasium, and last night | the. audience laughed so heartily at | the first entrances of some players

that the lines occasionally got lost. When Richard Kreusser, as Roger, came in wearing the last word in smart collegiate attire, the crowd just roared. Praise is due the technical staff, too numerous to name. They contrived a simple, well-designed, well-

lighted set—good to look at and

{ convincing. . { I'm still wondering what hap- | pened when, as I recall, Robert { Davis went upstairs and there came

| from backstage a noise as if he'd | fallen down the back stairs. You have to hand it to the actors: they | didn’t lose their cues.—H. B.

Opera Group Wins Praise

Jordan Singers Received With Enthusiasm.

By HENRY BUTLER

Opera in World War Memorial auditorium may seem a bit on the improbable side. But last night Joseph Lautner and a group of his Jordan conservatory opera department singers put on concert versions of famous operatic scenes with orchestral accompaniment. The last detail is little short of miraculous. Let's hope nobody got bruised by a trombone slide or hit in the eye with a flute, for those musicians were crowded together like veterans families sharing homes. Just try putting a 30-plece orchestra on a stage scarcely big enough for four-handed Canfield.

+ First Half Missed I'm sorry to have missed the entire first half of the program (it was no night to try to better the speed record from Broad Ripple down to Michigan st.). Some of the vocalists in part I were not represented in part II, and hence may not get the mention they deserve. Sung entirely in English, the scenes in part II included the tragic final duet between Carmen and Don Jose, sung by Paula Foster and Lloyd Patten; “This Rosary” trio from Ponchielli's “La Gioconda,” sung by Mary Euphrat, Miss Foster and Mr. Patten; and the famous “No Further,. That Is the Tower” duet from Verdi's “Il Trovatore” sung by Louise Holmgren and Robert Calland. Without implying comparisons, I can say that the audience gave the Verdi an especially enthusiastic reception. Miss Holmgren has an unusually fine voice, in range, quality and volume. Mr. Calland manages the best Italian style with skill June Gwyn, later heard in selections from “La Traviata” and “Aida,” has, I think, an unusually pleasing voice. 80 has Miss Euphrat, heard with Miss Holmgren and -Edward Ferrell in a trio from Beetho~ ven's “Fidelio.” ? Orchestra Ragged Despite Mr. Lautner's energetic

tra was regrettably ragged. Having criticized the Jordan orchestra before, I don't like to seem too captious. But there is such a thing as accuracy, which can be learned. And if one method of training the youngsters in that orchestra doesn’t work, then another should be tried: No conservatory orchestra should ever perpetrate anything like the initial attack in the “My Lord and God” quintet from Wagner's Lohengrin,” the final number. The evening's honors were decidedly vocal. Mr. Lautner has a fine, promising group of students in his opera classes. He has given them a lot of the grand opera manner as

| well as fine interpretative styles.
