later they came back. It seems that they liked many of the effects created by the architect, Leslie Ayres. After a brief period of Indeclsion, théy bought the home, Realizing it was too small to quarter a family with four children, they consulted with Mr. Ayres and Sherrill. FHA AUTHORIZED TO ISSUE SOME PERMITS
A new NHA directive now allows | FHA to, issue permits for starting construction during the next 60 days in certain exceptional cases for veterans and non-veterans. Houses above $10,000 may be approved under the following condi-
tions: Veterans—If for their own occupancy and they can show that prior to April 13, 1946, they had pure chased land and had made one or more commitments. Non-veterans—If they can meet these requirements without priority assistance and can show that prior to March 26 they had contracted for a prefabricated or precut house which was manufactured at that time.

It is situated on the banks of White river and Deauville heights, The address is 4318 Deauville rd. The Jameses were influenced by what they saw at the home show. Besides they had previously seen

Mrs. B. F. Orr, 5337 Kenwood ave., has two kinds of orchids blooming. Soon two other varieties will flower.
The stemless lady slipper or pink moccasin flower, blooming now, is | the most difficult of the hardy orchids to raise, Mrs. Orr told me. But | the pink flower with the odd pouched lip, resembling its témperameéntal

re. The hardy orchids, in their hative state, grow under evergreens, sometimes under oak trees, in acid, moist soil. So Mrs. Orr is raising hers under evergreens in partially shaded spots . s . TO BE BURE of soil acidity she sprinkles two handfuls of aluminum sulfate over about three square feet of the orchid bed in the fall when plants are dormant. She usually gives them two similar treatments during the summer, espécially if she has to do much sprinkling. The pine needles help, too, to maintain soil acidity. The ‘showy orchid which is in bloom now has a quite different flower. Its spike of small lavender blossoms somewhat resembles a hyacinth. The latter part of May the yellow lady-slipper will open its yellow pouched flower. It will be followed in a week or so by the showy ladyslipper, pink and white, These hardy orchids are best set in the fall, Mrs. Orr said. ss 2 8

UNDER HER fingers a variety of hard-to-raise plants settle down to a comfortable existence. Some of her boxwoods sre started from cuttings. “I just rooted them under a fruit jar as you would a rose,” she said. A cutting of viburnum carlesi, the fragrant snowball that will thrive in light shade, not only grew for her but set a bud in its second

AND I SHOULD tell you the story of the blue jay which repeatedly chased the more desirable birds out of Mrs. Orr's yard.
“I decided to scare him if I could but I didn't want to hurt him,” she sald, “So I set a trap and when I caught him I took a folded up newspaper and gave him #& good spanking!” 8he doesn't have any jays around her yard now.
o ” » YOU DON'T have to own a house to have a flower garden with a picket fence: around it, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Holladay live in a trailer at Morris st. and S. Tibbs ave. With true gardeners’ fervor they believe that “the place where you live can be an eyesore or you can make it attractive.” Mr. Holladay brought in sod to cover up underground water pipes 80 the “front yard” would look nice. They made a gravel path to their “front door.” Mrs, Holladay edged it with alyssum. She has cannas and cosmos planted to screen the under parts of the trailer from the street. Narcissus blossomed earlier in front of their picket fence. Now annuals are coming on there. And in their “rockgarden” pansies, petunias and verbenas are now

Everything else is the same as it was at the home show. Mr. and Mrs. James say that they are com- :| pletely sold on the coziness of their home and would not think of living anywhere else, Through the wide window in the rear of the house, they can look out onto White river and one of the most scenic views in Indian apolis. The James home was designed by Pierre and Wright, architects, and built by Mrs. Thelma Schaffner.
