BETWEEN OHIO AND NEW YORK STS,
By HENRY BUTLER The previous Thursday, it -had been the Philadelphia. orchéstra. Last night at the Murat, it was| “Jazz at the Philharmonic,” a more Shan vo» hour program of high-
Saas 3 ye go too serious, the contrast is instructive, The Philadelphia orchestra, tops flight, -“loses money. The personnel of “Jazz at the Philharmonic,"’also top flight, make money, For theirs is the music of jukeboxes and of recordings collected by passionate devotees of jazz. Theirs is the music that “sends” millions of people, and that, via radio, furnishes a tonal background to a vast portion of our national activity, What Is Jive?
What is this thing called jive? A critic's sort of on the spot, for, unless he strings along with Hugues Pannassie, John Hammond and the rest of the connoisseurs, he’s apt to sound fuddy-duddy. On the other hand, if he doesn’t know hepcat lingo (and I gure as heck don't), he may seem. As out of place as a Morag. Aba christen. ing. But I'l try 0 tell you some of what Colepadn Hawkins, Lester Young, Bufk Clayton and the rest of those’ fine performers did last it. What they did was give a great variety of solutions to fairly simple problems. Take a number like “Lady, Be

Good,” or “Sweet Georgia Brown.” They're both national folk-songs. You've heard them so often that (you can remember the harmonic structure with no effort, You may even whistle a few improvisations yourself, if you're in the grogye. Applause Spontaneous Messrs. Hawkins, Young, Clayton, Kersey et al, a lot of the. possibilities of those | numbergg, Those two remarkable tenor-sax men, Mr. Hawkins and Mr. Young, would step up to the microphone and do maybe two or three choruses solo, putting forthf not just music, but also autobiography. Any of those solos, like Mr, Clayton's on the trumpet (it takes a rugged guy to hit those high A flats) is, in effect, “What ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ means to me.” Last night's less-than-capacity audience savored all the hot licks. Spontaneous applause followed each solo, as well it might. For there was musicianship,
that work. Kenneth Kersey on the piano (that pedal-less, almost xylophone kind of piano-playing) really panicked the crowd with some of his fanciful’ passages—good, economical, sincere, artistic. Audience Pleased Meade Lux Lewis (Mr, Five By Five, if I ever saw him) did some astounding boogie on the long-suf-fering piano. With the most unorthodox fingering, using his hands almost like sea-lion flippers, Mr. Lewis got effects that made the audience sort of squeal with delight, To be honest, I'll have to admit that boogie strikes me as the St. Vitus dance of current popular music. Helen Humes, vocalist, in -a spectacular print dress, did mar, velous things with “8t. Louis Blues.” She has great charm, energy and showmanship,
it did give plenty of entertainment,
much sameness.
