The ‘Bobby-Soxer’ Label; They Think It's Out-Dated
By BOBBIE SCHAEFFER
THE TEEN-AGE SET is just about fed up with the bobby-soxer craze, As a lively punch line it put the teen-agers in the spotlight—
now the glare is too strong,
That's the way Marianna Fullen, Howe High school junior and president of the D, M. O. Sub-Deb club, describes the current teen-age
trend of ‘thought. “Bobby- soxer” surnilined with such adjectives as ‘‘screaming,” “swooning” and “jive-happy” has made the nation’s high “school
students the butt. of due criticism and ridicule fr the oldsters, she says. Marianna, wha is 16, knows
there's no stuffiness about the younger set—but it does have its own ideas and likes to have them respected.
“If there's juvenile delinquency, | 4
for instance, don't blame it on the bobby-soxers,” she says, “blame it on the parents.” Any good “soc” book will back her up. Teen-agers like action — she didn't deny their surplus energy —and they crave freedom of thoughts and ideas, in .school, community and home. A little more swing; the local talent angle and untying some of the-straight laces are needed in school assem-

for the kids, she thinks. n ”
» Against Cliques . . .
JIVE TALK is used pretty moderately, says the tall, attractive “brownette,” but parents are quick in picking up such jargon.
it seems |
Teen-agers should smother the |
clique instinct, Marianna believes. Meeting other schools’ “inmates”
and buzzing the talk with them |
is a good tonic,
The newly elected president of | the group ‘of 10 girls is planning |
to attend Indiana university after she. is graduated from Howe. With six years of piano instruc tion, Marianna thinks music , would make a nice career,
For Hot Fudge
SCHOOL IS swell, of course,
but she can't help looking for- |
ward to summer and swimming. The D. 'M. O.s are hoping for deep tans on their trip to Lake Manitou the last two weeks in August. : Mariana has lived with her parents and two brothers (one's in Korea now and one's at Indiana State Teachers college) at 126 Berry st. all her life. As for her new job as D. M. O. president—she hopes for a little more business-like order in meetings. As for her biggest weakness it's hot fudge sundaes. “I love ‘em,” she says.

FAULTY POSTURE is a cause of chronic tiredness, a bulletin from the Illinois State Medical society points out.
