NEW YORK, May 16 (U. P).— Just as bouncy, chatty and tuneful as ever, QGracle Fields, or “Our Grycle” to the folk in. England, is back from the war with canaries uppermost in her thoughts. The canaries are out at her home in Santa Monica, Cal. She raises them as a sideline to her movie and radio starring chores, Her anxiety to get back to them is understandable when you know she has spent the past year and one week traveling around the world to entertain allied soldiers. “I've probably got a lot of birds I've never even seen,” said Gracie, who, believe me, doesn't converse with the cockney accent that is her trademark as an entertainer. Left Through Frisco “We started from San Francisco last May fo do three months of entertainment for USO-camp shows among American soldiers on Pacific islands,” explained her husband, Monty Banks, who used to be quite a comedian in the silent film days, “I knew all the time we'd be gone a lot longer than that,” Gracie interpolated, indicating by a wink she had put one over on her manager husband. “Once you get started, it's hard to stop. There's always some place else to go on to where they need you.” Enjoyed Trip As the tour dragged out through the Philippines, Okinawa, the Solomons (they were at Bougainville when Japan gave up), the Cooos islands, Australia, New Zealand, India, Egypt, Italy, Greece and Austria, the singer's engagements back home received cellation after cancellation—concert tour, movies, radio. “And we had more fun out of the trip than the boys did out of the entertainment,” she sald, which must have been a lot of fun because Gracie never left any audience in any but a very happy condition. “It was a grand way to see the world—at government expense.” Mr. and Mrs. Banks reached Springfield, Mass, last Saturday after a flight from Rome in an army plane. They'll fly to Santa Monica this Saturday.
